B12 kit, mismatched dampers???

I recently came to replace a dust boot on a front Bilstein B12 kit damper and found that the offside damper had a 7mm allen key slot at the top, whereas the nearside had an odd star shaped slot that a 7mm allen key felt very loose in and a torx head didn't fit any better making it a challenge to undo the top nut:

Has anyone else found the same? I bought the kit new from autodoc and all the springs and dampers arrived in the official B12 box but have I got mismatched dampers do you think?

Thanks for any advice

Jeremy

Lower picture shows damage to a hex shaped recess…IMHO..looks very second hand..

JSz4, Is this the same 7mm Allen that the garage chewed up while undoing it ? :?

Yes it's the same damper but that picture was taken before I removed it from the car and before the garage chewed it up, I assume by trying to use an allen key in it. However it was a clearly defined star shape rather than hexagon.

This is what it now looks like courtesy of the garage..

Strange. The original lower photo definitely started off as a hex/Allen and looks to me like maybe somebody was mistakenly giving it some heave-ho with a 6mm Allen key, chewing it up in the process

FWIW I agree ..if you look at the top photo the left hand side centre part still shows the vertical line of a hex shape..usual story once they start to go then it’s just mashed …

Thanks for the replies. I fitted them four years ago and certainly would of remembered damaging it, just trying to think what reason a garage would have for touching it since.

I don't suppose there's anyway of recovering it once damaged like that?
