Average speed cameras

There are more and more of these getting put up in different areas permanently or sometimes temporarily while there are roadworks going on.
There are a couple of roads in Scotland that have had them for quite a few years and are a pain.
Recently there are temp ones on the M74 while there is major roadworks going on, the speed limit has been reduced to 50mph.
While travelling on these roads there always seems to be people who fly past without a care in the world while everybody else sits at the limit.
My question is, has anybody or does anybody know anybody who has actually been done for speeding though one of these average speed camera areas?
I dont know of anyone or even heard of anyone being done by these so are they just a deterant?

We have had average speed cameras in the Saltash Tunnel for several years. They are active and every so often they publish the average speeds of traffic through the tunnel, just to remind us locals they are there. As far as I know it would require an act of parliament before they could prosecute, using the evidence from these cameras, as it's not a safety black spot.

As for road works I'm sure people can be and do get prosecuted, using evidence from those cameras. Though like you I don't recall any one I know being caught. :wink:

People fly through these zones on the M62 so either they are not working or the government is making a fortune.

I think they must work - just checked on pocketgpsworld web site - it's full of reports on there about people being fined

'Following hot on the heels of Saturday's story about new speed cameras earning £40,000 an hour in Denmark, cameras on the M6 at junction 17, Cheshire have issued £160,000 worth of fines in just one morning.

Similar to the circumstances in Denmark, the M6's average speed cameras are in place to protect the work force during roadworks.

In total, 1,600 speeders were ticketed and all should expect a £100 fine and a minimum of 3 points on their licence.

NW (North West) Motorway Police tweeted: "The speed cameras on the M6 J17 in the road works are working, the limit is 50 mph. In one morning 1600 offences have been recorded".

I never go more than 55mph through these zones - where there are roadworks they will be active, end of. I can't believe that after so many years of use people still seem to think that the word 'average' means the average speed you are going based on the speed you're doing at each camera itself... As all the speeders slow down at a gantry. Either that or they're just feckin' idiots.

More and more gantry cameras on normally functioning motorways are set at or just above 70mph nowadays too, as well as the new ones on the M25 that are also in variable speed limit zones. I don't take the chance, just invest in up to date speed camera warning software and deal with it.

In 30 years or so you probably won't even be allowed to take a car that's not computer controlled on a motorway anyway. Just as well as I'll be a doddery old fecker and (even more) unsafe to drive...

I am a lot more careful since my speed awareness course, earned for 61 in a (variable) 50 on the M20 last year

My TomTom not only shows you where the speed cameras are, but it will tell you your average speed between average speed cameras. It is in its infancy as it does not yet have all cameras in its database.

They work, but i think you'll find there is a significant leeway allowed

No they won't and certainly not on minor A class roads, B and unclassified roads and let's face it the latter two are where our cars are most fun.

Never seen a speed camera on a B road, let alone an unclassified road, regardless of the speed limit.

I think it will go the opposite way :?
Speed enforcement cameras will become redundant & all cars will be individually tracked with internal GPS so "they" will know if you speed on any road anytime only a matter of time :thumbsdown:

As for the current obsession with introducing "smart" motorways :evil: call it what they like but its effectively the introduction of speed cameras under the guise of traffic flow management :thumbsdown:

The m60 around Manchester is full of average speed cameras, its while the do the traffic calming scheme. In 3 years time we will have gantries with gatso cameras like around Leeds and Birmingham. It will make it difficult to enjoy your Z4 on the motorway without collecting a speeding ticket. We will all have to be law abiding citizens. Shame

Thankfully, no I haven't. I have the likes of the Cairn o' Mount, Slug Road and many other uncameraed twisters to romp along. Get the occasional speed trap and the more regular deer jumping out but all in all they're pretty cool driving roads

I never speed through them but do feel like an idiot sometimes when there are people flying past going probably 30mph+ more than you are.
Its almost like they know something you dont, like the cameras dont work.
Just wondering as everybody knows someone who has been done by radar or normal speed camera but not these average speed cameras.
