Average speed cameras

I've often wondered this also. Theres major roadworks going on down here on the A13 (jct 30/31 M25 area) and as a result the speed limit has been dropped to 40mph along with a very long average speed camera zone.

I set my cruise control on both cars to 45mph and haven't been ticketed yet, so that must be OK, presumably because car speedo's over read by about 2mph at that speed.

Seen a few guys bombing through and not even slow down to average out their overall speed. Would love to know whether they got anything in the post.

You also get guys on the other end of the retarded spectrum insisting on doing 30mph the whole way.... Cue very dangerous overtakes, undertakes and slaloming by everything from bikers to hgv's. It all makes for a lot of very brown pants moments when it's busy.

There's a 3 mile section of them near my home. I travel it most days of the week and set cruise control.

As per the attached article never doubt they work - 14,000 drivers caught netting £1.5m in the three years after an initial amnesty.

As others have posted I never cease to be amazed at the number of folks who speed then brake for each of the 3 gantries. My favourite trick is actually to accelerate past the last gantry back to national speed limit by having a bit in hand..

Its weird though, that if B'ham bound, after the Bassetts pole roundabout there are no cameras and its possible that someone can go mental speeds for about the next five miles. Never understood this.

The logic was that on the Bassets Pole north bound stretch there are a couple of turn off's to quarries and as trucks turned across the centre reservation there were several deaths. Also with along steep hill people just went wild down hill. While 60 is too slow it was dangerous when folks were slamming into trucks and loony speeds.

On the other side headed South there are no entries or exits, just 2 islands with in reality not used entries or exits, so it's a racetrack with 2 chicanes. Jaguar use it as their test track :)

People fly through these zones on the M62 so either they are not working or the government is making a fortune.
My mrs got done on the M62 so they certainly work and you even get a nice photo of your car too! :D

I got caught by the roadworks average speed cameras on the M1 about 5 years ago, 3 points and £60 fine for 64mph in a 50.

More recently, I know a "friend" who went through on his motorbike at around 70mph on the m6 and nothing (of course as they're front facing)

I see a lot of people hovering at 55mph, and I know someone else who's front number plate fell off and took advantage of that on the average speed checks.

Could always use some black sticky tape on the front reg and blame local kids if you ever get caught...

Some won't even react until your average speed is much higher.
Someone I know from Surrey police confirmed that unless your average speed was 72mph on some stretches in Surrey you still wouldn't get a ticket.
I do still wonder about these numpties that seem to go a lot more than 50 without a care in the world.

The M3 is full of them at the moment whilst the road widening is going on. They're a pain and it takes forever to get along there.

Oh those A and B roads that they keep reducing to 50mph and 40mph!!

Never seen a speed camera on a B road, let alone an unclassified road, regardless of the speed limit.

We have the new PERMANENT Average speed cameras in a number OF villages around here. They are on narrow A roads where the limit is 30mph. No problem at all with that. But once they get enough computing power they will be able to use those same cameras to work out your average speed between the villages too. The time will no doubt come. :tumbleweed:
