Average speed cameras on M1 between J11 and J13

Does anyone use M1 between J13 (Milton Keynes South) and J11 (Luton North)? I notice 95% of vehicles go over 50 mph speed limit. Most of them are lorries.

Do those average speed cameras really work?

I've noticed this as well. I often travel up the A1 and there is major work improvements going on just before scotch corner and theres me sticking to the speed limit through the road works only to be constantly over taken by lorries. And then you hear on the radio of a accident somewhere or other that always involves a lorry

Yeah, same here - drove through the same stretch on Monday at 50 and overtaken by some guys doing at least 60.

Has anyone been caught, or know someone who has been caught, by average speed cameras?

Not sure about those on the M1, but a while ago a friend of mine had to attend a speed awareness course (in lieu of three points) after being busted by an average speed camera at 50mph in a 40mph limit in roadworks on the M4

I was in the UK earlier this year and on the M1 but further north in a roadworks just south of Leicester and had the same experience, i.e. HGV's and PSV's well over the 50mph limit while I was just below 50mph on C.C. due to average speed cameras. I questioned this with a friend who is involved in Nottinghamshire and was told that larger vehicles are for the most part immune due to technical reasons. Apparentley it's a similar situation for HGV's and PSV's with the mobile radars. I have no details as they would not expand on the situation for me but it did go someway to explaining why you hear of so many PLG drivers being prosecuted for speeding relative to the number of HGV's that you see speeding and are too often involved in accidents. Important to note that I was also assured that should I keep up with the HGV's and PSV's in an average speed camera zone I could be reasonably sure of recieving a prosecution.

i often drive this stretch ... and i must average 60 now.... based upon my road angel speed (so around 63 on my speedo) and i still get overtaken.

i'll fill in on this one. 3 points SP50 for 64mph during motorway roadworks

not at an explanation will make my insurance cheaper but... the cones had finished a while back and i was just speeding up and didnt see the last camera. (i know it was the last one as there where markings on the road and i drove the route again to see where id been caught)

EDIT: this was the m6-m1 south junction about a year ago

SPECS cameras have a 'flaw' arising from the original type-approval process that has never been updated.

They can only prosecute where a vehicle has been identified as being in the same lane at BOTH cameras, so lane-hopping between cameras prevents detection.

In addition to that, most motorway roadworks setups only have two cameras covering the middle and fast lanes, so guess where the safe place to drive is?

I think you are wrong - that flaw was filled pretty quickly.

details would be useful? I drive SPECS very frequently at - ahem - inconsistent speeds, and lane hop regularly.....not been hauled in to date so I believe this to still be the case.

As Gannet said, i too have read somewhere that this flaw has now been dealt with

I believe gannet is correct... The first set introduced in Nottingham had one camera covering both lanes.... So lane hoppers could trick the system.... If you look on the m1 all the camera's are now in pairs. Even the a40 in London had one camera per lane during it's road works.

However I don't see a camera covering the single lane on the m1.... Where you drive on the other side of the armco.

I set my cruise to just over 50 in that stretch, so not really a great test. The GF regulary does more like an average 60 on that stretch and has never got ticket for it.
