Average Speed Camera Query

So I was sat stationary on the M6 in the miles of average speed cameras this evening on my way home from work and my mind got to wondering about how they calculate.

I assume they record the number plate at each of the cameras and work out average speed s=d/t between the cameras.. or is it across the whole length of the cameras, therefore I was curious as I was sat absolutely stationary for a good ten minutes if I could blast through the rest of the cameras at 70  and make the average up.

Am I being rather optimistic? Thoughts?

Don't know, but I bet it's less than the entire length. I can imagine it started out as entire length, but now I wouldn't be surprised if it was between cameras.

Normally they will track your speed through each set not the whole string. Also FYI some of them are able to do you on the spot as well so even though your average was 70, if you were above the threshold at the camera they will take a lovely picture of you just like the Gatso's used to. The new ones on the M1 will do this as my dad found out :headbang:

It's between camera sets, so a blast to the next camera would be about it !

+1.
Also the older camera's are lane restricted. If you think you've gone through too quickly it's worth changing lanes before the next camera

Still amazes me how many people go between these at clearly illegal speeds, but slow down at each camera. As if it just measures your speed at each point. Numpties

Apologies, quick check on GPSWorld web site states this is an urban myth

I heard that, but I never thought anyone could design something so fundamentally flawed.. unless it was cheap.

+1 to that, see 5 or 6 do this on a daily basis, must be such a money maker.

On a side note I'm assuming its average +10% +2 like the gatso?

I know you changed your post but in fact this was that the cameras were not approved for multiple lanes, so more a legal thing than technology. It was changed soon after introduction so as you say is now an urban myth.

Just tailgate the car in front, seemed to be the principle for the two white vans bombing through the A1 average speed camera section yesterday afternoon...

There's a set of these just south of Cheltenham on the M5 (lasting until 2015 :headbang: )

I regularly see people blast through these stretches at 70+ (not slowing for cameras) so clearly they know something I don't.

At least I don't work in Sheffield anymore... there was a lovely 50 stretch on the M1 which lasts for about 16 miles lol.

Well I spoke to a bloke that went up for 70 mph in an average 50 restriction .......... measured between 2 of the camera's ........

Thing is, it was thrown out of court because his average over the whole length was below 50 mph ........

I believe the judgement was based on the wording ...... when you enter an average speed zone ........ it does not say "maximum speed limit is ...... " the wording implies that over the entire distance of the sector it says your average speed will be checked.

To be legal, apparently, it would have to inform you that your average speed between cameras was being calculated ........ and as far as I know, none of them say this .........
