A nice looking SLK passed me yesterday and it was really spoiled by the noise of the diesel engine

Last oil burning SLK driver that was in front of me got a free sample of the 35iS sound track at WOT with a bonus gear change... I never realised that there was an ejector seat option

Are you sure you meant to say that?
They are not that much different to the Z or any other 2 seater really.
But he did have hair and he was dressed.... at least from the shoulders up.

I remember going to work in my wifes 1990 MR2 and was slagged for driving a hairdressers car.

I have a 2L 8 speed twin clutch with paddles. In the winter, comfort mode plod it around. Summer, roof down, sport mode and manual paddles. Rev the nuts off it and drive like a yob Tried a manual, shift was too long and clunky. The auto is very responsive in sport mode.

Are you sure about this, 2 litre 8 speed twin clutch (ie DCT)? When I bought my current E89 I was informed by BMW that DCT was only available on the 7 speed 35 model.

You are correct. The 7sp is DCT , The 8sp is an auto 'box.

Sorry yes your right. Got carried away with my numbers. I thought the sales guy had said the 8 speed m sport had double clutch but having a look.. It's just an auto. That said, does have a seemless upshift.

Then again, I view the Z4 as more a GT than an 'out and put' sports car so an automatic is acceptable if you want to waft around at a fair old speed.

Exactly why I went for the Z4 over a BRZ & Cayman... Yeah the BRZ & Cayman will run rings around the 35iS in the handling stakes but as a baby GT they can't compete with the Z4. Had I got the money I'd want a Z4 35iS & a Cayman GT4. To my mind they compliment each other perfectly.

My 20 year old F355 runs rings around the Z4 in the both the handling and noise stakes - it's no GT though, that's for sure!

Only the SLK 55 AMG comes up to scratch when compared with the 35is performance wise and that takes a V8 to do it and costs several thousands more. All the others are smaller (boot and interior) and considerably slower 0-62. They didn't call Clarkson's car the SL Gay for nothing

But for all its flaws the SLK/SLC is by far the the most direct competition to the Z4 in my book. It feels like a baby GT sports car, everything else I tried felt like it (trying) to be a handling sports rather car than a baby GT sports car.

Take the size of the engines and the performance out of the equation, they look similar and thats what the average person sees.

Cheers guys i think ill make the DCT auto my first choice

My prior car, a 2003 Boxster S, had a Tiptronic transmission with toggles on the steering wheel. Since the car would not let you select too low a gear, I found that I could preselect a lower gear, perhaps two down, as I approached a corner at speed, while braking. When I hammered the gas while leaving the turn, I was already in the correct gear for acceleration. I think that the performance was still quite "sporting", and I doubt that I could have shifted gears as efficiently or quickly with a manual. My Jaguar XK8 (before the Porsche) was also an automatic, but I did not drive it in the same fashion as either the Porsche or the Z4. I am very happy with the paddles in the Z4, but have yet to give it a real workout to make a fair comparison with the Boxster S.

I trading mt Audi TTS DSG gear box to a manual Z4 28i. I will miss the auto a great deal. I may regret not getting an auto but the price was right on the Z4 I am buying.

I have since changed my mind and put deposit on automatic 28i m sport. I doubt it will live up to the tts s tronic. I will find it hard to go back to manual now.
