Completely agree with this and had the S-Tronic gearbox in a TT-S and have the ZF8 in a 640d and I genuinely can't really understand why anybody rates that type of gearbox highly unless you are constantly stuck in traffic, because as soon as the road opens up both the S-Tronic and Auto gearboxes are as boring as hell for sure.MattHall91 said:The S tronic box in my A3 is mightily impresive and I am glad I went for it to cover 35k miles a year in.
However if I could have a 2nd car for weekends, I wouldn't look twice at even a DCT. I have come to appreciate the circumstances under which each gearbox is the best choice (for me).
The fact is there really isn't any real difference and if anything the auto actually does a better job overall because it does the slush bit far better but also responds well in the right mode too, the problem with DCT/S-Tronic is that they are really good when pushing on but fall down at doing the rest of it.dr_john said:I don't really get this DCT vs auto issue.
I love my 8 speed auto, smooth as silk, fast and responsive enough for me during normal everyday driving.
I understand the mechanics of a DCT box, but what is the difference as a driver? Maybe I'm missing a point here![]()
I am now on my fourth DCT/S-Tronic car and moving slowly both forwards and backwards is no problem at all. Problems are usually experienced by those who want to drive the things the same as a manual - they are not the same and the required technique needs to be acquired. Those who have an inability or are unwilling to adapt their driving style will have problems with a DCT/S-Tronic transmission.LeeZ4MR said:. . . . . I just found it annoying and you don't get the same problem with a slush auto, I admire the DCT/S-Tronic gearboxes for the quick shifts and they are technical masterpieces for sure but I just personally prefer a normal auto over a DCT/S-Tronic.Garvin said:I am now on my fourth DCT/S-Tronic car and moving slowly both forwards and backwards is no problem at all. I hardly ever get any satisfaction from driving a car that has an auto or DCT with paddles but I do appreciate them in stop/start traffic though, when I have ran a weekend car it's always been a three pedal manual and I know if I had a weekend car with an auto or DCT I would never be interested in using it.mr.tourette said:Seriously I don't get anyone who says you have to have a manual to have any kind of true satisfaction of a driving experience... utter nonsense... if that were the case you may as well say to have true satisfaction you should leave the car at home and get out on a sports motorbike because there is a no more involving an experience on the road than that!
We all derive our enjoyment and satisfaction from different points of view...there's no right or wrong answers here.... auto.. manual.. dct.. smg...steptronic... flappy paddles, its all different gravy. "its a sports car it HAS to be a manual" no it doesn't... if it did there wouldn't be all these other options![]()
Point taken...it would have been even more involving if it had a three pedal manual thoughmr.tourette said:https://youtu.be/ufzdL1JaEKM
check this out... not a manual shift in sight... very uninvolving:lol:
