Auto or manual

The biggest problem with the paddle setup is knowing what gear you are actually in :).

On my 8 speed auto the current gear is shown on the display when using the paddles or the stick manual mode.
Indeed - grappling with a 35iS in a twisty bend with rocks and potholes all over the place the last thing you need to be doing is looking at the dash as the G-force if forcing your head out the window :D

Fair point! :D

But why do you need to know what gear you're in? The formula is simple - want more revs pull on the left paddle, if you want less revs pull on the right hand paddle.

Totally agree, what it does it matter what gear your in if it feels right then it is right :)

Never ever wanted an auto before but this time I think it's the way to go..
Maybe I'm getting old. Lol

I have a 2L 8 speed twin clutch with paddles. In the winter, comfort mode plod it around. Summer, roof down, sport mode and manual paddles. Rev the nuts off it and drive like a yob :D Tried a manual, shift was too long and clunky. The auto is very responsive in sport mode. :driving:

This comment sells the auto for me. Sounds perfect

A time when taking one hand off the wheel to check what gear you're in is a rather bad idea ;)

If there was a 'right' answer there would be no choice. They'd all be built one way as certain cars are, but we like choices. All depends on the car and use.

I have 3 autos and 1 manual. All perfect for their own uses.. Well ok except for a 500hp small lock v8 hooked to a 3 speed auto on 36" tyres. That's wild when it decides to shift...

Have to say that i'm on my 2nd 28i with the auto 8spd box and I think it's a great combo. Never had auto myself before the E89 but have always driven them in the family. The ZF 8 spd box is a beaut and really complements the turbo engine.

Are you sure about this, 2 litre 8 speed twin clutch (ie DCT)? When I bought my current E89 I was informed by BMW that DCT was only available on the 7 speed 35 model.

Again, I may stand corrected :)

You are correct. The 7sp is DCT , The 8sp is an auto 'box.

And don't get me started on diesel v petrol ;) :D

I'm so glad the zed doesn't come in with a diesel option.
Roadsters are for petrol heads :D
A nice looking SLK passed me yesterday and it was really spoiled by the noise of the diesel engine
