In terms of diameter how much wider are the new pipes to he old?

Hi Wullie, not sure how wide the OE pipes are..pictures show a number of constrictions in the design…the necks are 1.75”…

You can order the replacements in either 1.75 or 2 wide..the bigger turbos have a 2” flange hence the change

Nice, even just with a more "flowing" shape you can get big gains in terms of airflow plus those look like excellent quality strong pipes. When are the snails due?

Yes they reckon 30-50 BHP depending on boost / other factors ..not sure how much is placebo..

I’m rubbing myself up and down on these on a regular basis..

Nope that's the strange shape of some N54 inlet pipes..I haven't taken mine off so that's a shot from another N54 powered BMW.

The purveyors of snake oil reckon its 'les testicules des chiens' as part of the big turbos and letting them 'breathe'...

Regardless I'm sure the aftermarket will give you some improvement. Just be careful with all that extra power... dont want you to have too much to handle

I'm looking for some tuition from an ace road racer, maybe you can suggest somebody?

Its geared for about 183 mph on OE sizes..The computer predicts 172 mph at peak power (5,700) if it had enough power and had Vmax removed.

275/30 tyres gives it a 1.9% gearing advantage so peak power (non tuned) hits 175 mph..oh so close..maybe with a tailwind..

Obviously depends how and where the power falls off..those new turbos are still small so the torque/bhp profile is biased left not right.

You can see the trend on the re-map of the current turbos..will ahve to wait till the dyno gets its teeth in..

I suspect unlike the S54 engine that revs to the redline and beyond the N54 will start to run out of puff trying to pull top gear close to max revs..

So only the very best driver could get the 185 ish conjunction of speed/power/gearing..

Not going to find out on the run to Lidl in Hawick..

I did wonder about the size of the turbos, but then personally I'd agree with that, the responsiveness of the turbos make them usable, its all very well making 600bhp but if you need to be at 5 or 6k before you get access to it :thumbsdown:
Looking at that graph if the torque could be maintained a bit longer as well as being higher that would be a very nice boost.. of boost

Yes I went with their 'entry level' babies..should be good for 550 bhp at the crank.. 500 ish wheel horse power, hence their name.. 700+ nm at the crank..

They do some TTE600s (650 bhp 860nm) for E89s and TTE680s (700 bhp 940nm).

But as you can see from the graphs that comes with lower down torque with the 600s and the unmentioned turbo spool lag..which gets worse the bigger you go..

I guess the good news if the loonies are out there at 700 bhp then, 550 bhp is mere bagatelle.

550 is a good target with roughly the same torque, much more than that and you're looking at car that will be a rocket ship in a straight line but a bit of a handful in the corners, especially on the sketchy and uneven surfaces of a standard UK backroad :chophead:

Yes the babies are 550 bhp and over 700 nm torque..

I see a 2021 G80 BMW M3 Competition is around 500 bhp and 650nm..

Looking at https://www.automobile-catalog.com/ for some apples for apples data..

So with a drag factor of 0.707 for an E85M, 0.772 for an M3 and 0.686 for an E89 we are looking good on drag..

Weight wise the E85M is around 1700kg, the M3 around 2200kg and the 35is is 1855kg

They reckon that top speed wise it would be 172/189/172 respectively based on simulation.

So with less overall drag and less weight than a M3 with a bit more power it should do 0-155mph in less than 20 seconds..(M3 23.7)

Of course that's a stock E85 and M3 and you can quite cheaply tune a M3..but as a bar room brag 0-155mph in 20 seconds and around 185 mph doesn't sound bad..might keep me ahead of Alien Zed with his re-map and Patriot66 with his supercharger!

I realise at the first corner I'll have to teeter around at 45 mph though.

As an aside I'm really impressed with that Ohlins kit.. the ride is really good and the handling is much much better..the more I drive it the better it gets..maybe its just bedding in..

Had the 437M wheels re-done in powder coat gloss black finished with clear lacquer…£320 for a drive in , drive out service from these boys.

Brief look seems quality is good..one year warranty..

Not sure whether to stick the baby MSport logos back on or leave them as is? Less is more?

You need some decent sized discs and bigger calipers with those open spoked designs. They look much better in gloss black. Since they are genuine BMW I think the little badges will go well.

Got around to fitting my B58 coil upgrade kit over the last couple of days.

Was relatively straigthforward. Getting the existing wiring out of the plastic tray that routes and protects it was a bit vexing.

Covered as much of the wiring with spiral wrap to offer some physical protection.

Took about 4 hours for a thumb laden mumpty to do.

Have access to a farmers barn for about 7 days so taking advantage to try and do a few jobs that I can attempt.

You can see the B58 coils are much chunkier than to stock ones.

Since I needed to toggle on the B58 coil upgrade in MHD, this co-incided with the release of V10 maps. So loaded V10 stage 2+ 98 RON with no throttle lag and linear thottle, plus coolant in sport mode.

So given previous misfire on stage 2+ with 30 thou gaps when booting WOT from 80 to 120 I narrowed gaps to 25 thou (some suggyest 18-22), and hope that the new higher energy /longer duration sparks will fire the mixture both at the top end and on idle.

Not been out to test it, plan to dyno it next week..happy days.

Heh heh…yes it’s either yellow or black…in my old age I’m going for a mellow look in the engine bay..hence maybe covering up that stainless steel strut brace?
