Ask-Reg.com problem

Bought a cherished plate from this site last Saturday but received and heard nothing.

Upon investigating further it seems there are others that have paid for a reg number and not heard back or recieved goods paid for in full. Any ideas what course of action I can take to get my money back.

Paid in full (£281) through SagePay and Verified By Visa. Emailed them and tried calling but the number disengages after two rings. Seriously vexed by it all amd determined to get back what is owed to me.

Call your card company and explain the situation. They will issue a chargeback and you should be refunded no questions asked.

Thanks man. Do you know how long I have to wait first? For some reason I have 15 days in my head.

Their registered address is a Regus serviced office in Theale. Doesn't mean they're dodgy, just means they are probably working out of someone's home address :?
  • 1210 Parkview
    Arlington Business Park
    Reading
    Theale
    Berkshire
    RG7 4TY

Their 'complaints' (and Companies House) address is:
  • Customer Services
    Wyndmere House
    Ashwell Road
    Steeple Morden
    Herts
    SG8 0NZ

However, most of these registration companies don't own any plates, and are just acting as an intermediary for the (usually) private seller - unless it's simply one that the DVLA have in stock (which should be cheaper to buy direct). This means that whenever they get an order, they then have to track down the seller, ask them if they're still interested in selling, negotiate a price and then get it transferred to you. Which can take a while. However, they should keep you informed as the order progresses.

Thanks. At the time of purchase DVLA site didnt have it listed and the Ask-Reg price was fixed (wheras some are negotiable). Emailed them and guess if I dont hear back then go to my debit card company. On the Verified By Visa site it also says your protected for online purchases that fail to show up too so fingers crossed Im covered. Not going to let this drop thats for sure.

Update: SagePay have asked me to email them all the the transaction details so they can contact them on my behalf. If I still dont hear back a week later I need to speak to my card issuer apparently. Hoping I'm covered as it was a VISA debit transaction through VBV system :(

these little things can be so annoying and stressful :headbang:
That they can Taz, that they can. Reserving absolute cynacism for a few days yet but my instinct tells me I've been stung.

Was it a Credit or Debit card?

Credit should be fine, I've used this function once, don't think it took long, but that may depend on circumstances.

Debit card, bit was through Verifed by Visa system which 'says' your more protected against undelivered goods and scams. Speaking of which it must be my day to be scammed. Just had a response to my laptop for sale claiming to be interested. Quick Google search tells me it's a Nigerian scammer.

It never rains...

For section 75 to apply, certain conditions must be met. Most credit card purchases will be covered, but:

the cash price of the goods or services must be more than £100 and not more than £30,000; and
purchases are not covered if they are made by debit cards or by charge cards (where the monthly bill has to be settled in full).

Unless the rules have changed since.

From the Verfied By Visa website:

Shop safely online

Online shopping is as safe as the high street and it’s reassuring to know:

If you’re the victim of online fraud
If your order is not delivered
If you receive the wrong item
If your order is delivered damaged
If your travel company or airline goes under before your trip or whilst you are away
AND you have paid with your Visa card, you can get your money back (subject to your bank’s terms and conditions).

I hope so

Reading into it today apparenty VISA debit cards are significantly more secure in these types of events than Maestro or Switch etc.

Ultimately if thats a dead end then there must be a way to get money back on something youve paid for but not received; would seem like madness if not.

If you used a VISA credit card you'll be fine. Your contract is with the card issuer, who themselves have a contract with the vendor. The card issuer will refund you, and reclaim all the costs from the vendor. If they are met with resistance, the legal weight of the credit card company will absolutely crush a small internet company such as this

...of course if it was a VISA debit card, it may be a little more problematic...

edit: whoops! Just read the who thing more carefully, and saw that it was debit. Hopefully the intermediary company will sort you out working on the same premise.

Yeah, saw that too Ranski. Nightmare. Well, at least VISA got back to me on the protection side of things. They said that credit or debit cards should be okay so I'll be speaking to my bank for chargeback with all evidence next week.

Got lucky. The owner of Ask-Reg contacted me apologising for lack of contact and that the site database wasnt updated and the plate isnt available. Paid back full refund.

Might have had something to do with me finding his personal email address and contacting the CNDA (Cherished Numberplate Dealers Association) of which his company is a member of.
