Ashtray lid not closing

The top slides on and is held with 2 clips. When it's open vertically push the lid down and see if it clicks in.

When I say "down" I mean perpendicular, and not closing
 
Thanks Greg, tried that but still not working. The lid works without the silver top absolutely fine, when I put it back on, won't close.
On the odd occasion I do manage to close it, it still does not sit flush with the rest of the centre console.
 
Im sure I posted pics of the underside of the ashtray and the small metal wire that holds the lid shut. The wire will have came out of position or be missing.
I cant find the pics anymore on my PC, a lot of pics got ditched and they must have been part of.
If you search the forum for similar the pics will be here somewhere.
 
Mine can be a bit difficult sometimes as well. I found if you push it closed on one corner (I think the one closest to the passenger seat), rather than in the middle, it shuts a lot more reliably. Not exactly a fix but it might help out in the short term.

I've got the same issue, did you fix yours? I found the metal clip which had fallen out but the plastic bit that holds the clip under tension had also been snapped off. It might not look as nice but I think I'm going to have to replace the whole unit with the lidless storage cubby instead.
 
Has the centre console been out?

Mine didn’t shut properly after reinstalling & was just hadn’t been reseated properly
 
It looks like the plastic bit that holds the metal clip in has snapped off, so like ClumUK I have ordered the storage part No.1 as it is a better option for me and the ashtray to replace is more expensive

I ordered the cubby hole storage, which I'll use to keep my phone from BMW online.

It was sent via Lloyds Carlisle £20.61 incl delivery.
