AP BBK Kit on a Z4M

Has anyone fitted this kit on their M? i Just need a few questions answered.

1) Do the larger disks fit with the standard Z4M 18" wheels assuming spacers are used?
2) As the callipers are larger than stock, is there enough room for the bigger callipers or do i have to modify the area?

Thanks
Rich

Thanks mmm-five for the links.

Turns out that the discs (356mm) are too big for the oem 18" wheels. Gutted as i'll have to spend more on 19" if i want the kit fitted.

Alternatively, i was wondering if i could fit the calipers to the stock discs - any ideas??

you could always upgrade the pads first to Padgid. sixspeed i believe has done this to great effect.... he may have upgraded from these by now, but i know he spoke highly of these in the past.

Dario

See you at Spa.

AP used my car to design fit and test the AP kit.

You can squeeze their brakes under 18 inch wheels but the clearance is so small AP will not recommend it. Balance weights will strike the calipers (but can be moved) and the 'spokes' have no more than 2mm clearance. So it is possible. How hard do you ride the kerbs on track?

In case you have slotted discs, does the rear racing AP disc look different to the standard BBK front one?

I think there so overpriced for what they are. I've got AP's on the V6. But I wouldn't spend the best part of 3k on the M.

What i do wish is that BMW had reached into their pockets and put decent brakes on it in the first instance!!! Look at the S3/RS4/etc. they all have nice 4/6pot brembo's/AP's!!

Oops! I have just taken delivery of both the front and rear kits based on an AP employee's opinion that both kits are a direct replacement (no spacers required) of the OEM parts. Is it certain that the front kit fits? Pls understand my ignorance in terms of understanding the pdf AP analysis as to whether wheel clearance is fine...!

Γεια σου φιλαράκι! Καλωσόρισες στο φόρουμ! :thumbsup: Μ έχεις και εσύ; Δυστυχώς δεν ξέρω για το πρόβλημα σου να σε βοηθήσω αλλά ίσως ένα από τα άλλα παιδιά εδώ να ξέρει. Γιατί δεν ξεκινάς ένα δικό σου θέμα να μας δείξεις λίγες φωτογραφίες της μπέμπας σου;

Welcome to the forum mate. I'm afraid i cant really help but hopefully one of the guys here can offer some advice. Meanwhile why dont you start another thread and show us some pictures of your car? :)

Thanks for the welcoming note..No doubt I will post a new thread introducing my self. I was so certain and confident when I purchased the brake kits that I didn't bother to raise a query regarding wheel clearance in a forum such as yours! Hopefully it will be a close call otherwise I will call AP and start asking serious questions!...Mind you I haven't opened the boxes yet. Maybe there is something in there in writing giving installation instructions.

Welcome to the forum mate.

With reference to your questions above and assuming it's the M3/CSL kit you bought, i'm afraid you will have to make a few modifications before the kit can fit on your car. All the points below relate to the fronts (356mm) as i believe the rears are a direct fit without any modifications.

(1) The Bells (black centre of the disc which attaches to the hup) will need to be changed as part no for the Z4M is different to the e46. I beleive the revised Bell for the Z4M allows more clearance between the disc and wishbone/lower arm of the car.
(2) Bolts will also need to be changed as again the part for the Z4M is different.
(3) You may also want to consider 19" or a different set of 18" rims such as BBS which give more BBKs clearance as the stock wheels will not/marginally clear the discs (1-2mm at best).

I've spoken to AP directly and that's where the above guidance comes from. I have the part no's for (1) and (2) above and will post them up tomorrow.

Thanks for this!

The code for the Z4M kit is different than the code for the m3 kit. The invoice refers to "Z4M kit front" and "E46 M3 kit rear".

I am surprised as I specifically queried the AP salesman whether any mods would be required in terms of a wheels change or use of spacers. He emphatically said no. Further, AP's website states that the kit for the specific vehicle is applicable to the standard 18'' wheel set up.

If someone would be able to explain how to interpret the pdf "wheel clearance" file posted on AP's website then I guess that this would solve the puzzle. In any event I have now booked an appointment with the dealer to (i) perform an oil service, (ii) install new shocks and top mounts (OEM) and (iii) install the brakes. Let us hope that there are no nasty surprises during the process.

Cbisbi,

Did you buy the kit from the UK? Did you ship it to Greece or are you based over there?

I bought them from the UK - goods were shipped to Greece and received Tuesday last. I live in Athens although I was a UK resident sometime ago.

I am thinking of going the same route...Did you get grooved or slotted discs? Didi the installation go smoothly? Which vendor did you buy them from?

Oh, why did you change suspension mounts? Where did you perform the surgery?

Sorry, lots of questions, couldn't resist. I would appreciate your input.

I bought them from AP direct. The instalation is in process and it is carried out by BMW/Athens Car. I know personally the chief mechanic since his "Spanos" days. Although the vehicle has 45k km on the clock I had noticed a reduction in the shocks' performance. I always thought that a change of shocks should be accompanied by a change of top mounts. Possibly not necessary-precautionary nevertheless.

I will keep you posted!

ok. Kits have been installed. Pedal is great although I will bed the brakes in for at least 1,000 miles. As predicted by Blacklines, the balance weights on the front rims had to be moved.

The caliper is almost scratching the rim! And while turning the steering from to lock to lock I can hear a slight grinding sound.

I am worried!

:( Sorry to hear that mate! I really hoped everything would go smoothly.
