Anywhere in the UK you can take your Zed to see what it will do?

Was pondering how fast a de-restricted Zed would go..

Sadly my days of using the M11 as a private test track are long gone.

So the question is, are there events that you can attend as a non professional sports person to see what it will do?

Somewhere like Elvington would appear to be a good place but they do not entertain the public doing such things..

Bruntingthorpe is an old runway that has a mile long straight, maybe longer I’m not sure, if you want to do full power straight runs. Not 100% if it’s open to the public on any day but there are regular days you can go to burn a tank full I think.

you're thinking of VMAX200 events, run at bruntingthorpe:

http://www.vmax200.com/

from what i hear, tend to be attended by supercars and heavily modified german saloon cars, that kinda thing.

me personally, i always used to use the M45 just east of coventry... sure there are some decent, quiet straight roads in scotland somewhere...

Though, to be honest, top speed is fairly irrelevant... you never do it in day to day driving. you're running what, 340bhp? (cant find the exact number) so i'd guess 160-170mph is achievable, but in the nicest possible way, whats the point? :)

Hello thanks for the info..

Actually where I live in Scotland much as you can get up to say 110/120 in several places there are no dual carriageways or motorways..

The consequences of being busted at 120mph+ I would imagine would be less than amusing..would be just my luck for the one and only speed camera / traffic car to be out plus I don't think there is really the room to do that plus bumpy roads , very few flat roads etc etc etc

I absolutely agree that its purely academic..but..my curiosity has been peaked and I ponder what the perforrmance figures of all my mods are..

To that end I've bought a data logger and if I can persuade some of my associates to do some timed trials, then 0-60 / 0-100 / 1/4 mile SS etc are all possible elsewhere.. but a top speed past 155 mph will take some space!

So yes, not necessary but thought I would put it on the calendar for 2021 as something to do..

95% of my mileage for the sports cars are on the continent, a bit easier for me to reach than you of course. Taking the cars to their maximum is fun, however pointless perhaps, and trackdays are not for me as having done a couple in loan cars, a bit boring.

I do remember the old days long ago on the (then) deserted autobahn to Paderborn before the Wall came down..

Indicating 125mph in my 2 litre Granada Ghia with Porksters going by like I was standing still..

I agree its a bit futile but ... not sure I'd want to mix with a lot of supercars owners either.. :tumbleweed:

I was more hoping that someone could lend my a 2-3 mile runway for an afternoon..

I did some production racing way back ..I realised that I did not have the necessary lack of fear to be any good at it..gave up..so track days don't hold any joy for me..

This is right next to me though, would that work? :D

Santa pod do ‘Run what you brung’ events.... I think it’s a fiver a run.

Will be full of cap wearing chavs and Saxo’s etc, though so maybe not....

Pbondar - I know Paderborn and the surrounding area very well. When was you out in Germany?

I can cope with chavs but I don’t think they have any road to get close to maxing out a circa 300 bhp car?

I know it reasonably well too. Used to do 4/6 trips out a year as ex sister in law and husband lived in Germany. Niece was born in Paderborm and they lived in Marienfeld. I used to take the kids to Olde pool and park, shows how poor our council/LA services are once you’ve been there!

I worked for Nixdorf / Nixdorf Siemens circa 1988-1990 so visited Paderborn a number of times and spent 3 months on secondment there..Bad Salzufen was one of my favourite little towns..amusing when the Wall came down and all the Trabbies and Wartburgs came across in a blue fug..

I came back briefly in a later career circa 1999 ...but times had changed so much by then..

Peter, you’ll need to see if you can arrange to get access to the ex stealth bomber runway in Campbeltown when doing the Kintyre run

Seemingly the longest runway in Britain, was a contender for Branson’s space tourist program because of its length. I managed 130 something in an RS Turbo down it during the period was being built. The car ran out of puff long before I ran out of road. My mate was one of the contractors so had access through that.

No that’s true, it’s a 1/4 mile run not max speed.

Hi Andy..I had pondered that but it’s an active civil airport but given COVID-19 etc I can’t see it being very busy...I suspect public liability etc may interfere...given that I have a data logger soon I won’t need any supporting kit..

I’ll do some digging

The only other thing I can think of Peter is if next years Mach1 event goes ahead because it’s a racing event and they might have all the liabilities covered under the event umbrella and afaik they have access to the whole airport on that weekend.

Just look at that road stretching out behind those bikes :driving:

I’ll check...if we could do it maybe even a special event...something to add to the winter to do list..

This is an interesting for topic as it would be nice to be able to take my car somewhere for a blast without taking it on a track.

There seems to be more and more speed restrictions in Germany as years go by, so it’s not the free for all that a lot of folk think if is.

Bruntingthorpe is no more - the site has changed hands and the entire runway and most of the hard standing is now used for car storage. The classic jets collection has mostly been moved out bar the aircraft owned by David Walton, no more taxi runs and no more GA flying sadly as its noted by the CAA as permanently closed.
The proving ground web site is still live though.
