Anyone Using Vista?

Had to buy a new laptop two months ago as I dropped the other one and smashed the screen.

Got a shiny new ACER with a great screen. Came pre installed with Windows Vista Home Premium. Would have got XP Pro but all the shop had was this one.

So far the problems are as follows,

Wireless Networking did not work for two months until a new driver became available.

Could not connect to varous networks. Again a wireless network driver problem.

Administrative rights are a joke. Admin should mean Admin!

Nag screens when you open a program. I clicked on it so of course I want to run the F***ing program.

Bluetooth does not work.

Various software problems in that software did not run or installed ok then crashed in a spectacular manner.

Boots up to a blank screen. Have to run explorer through Task Manager to get the Desktop.

DVD ROM drive gone. Cannot find it anywhere.

Now in the situation that I cannot restore the OS as the DVD is gone. Cannot restore Applications and drivers as the partition in corrupt and even if I could find the Restore DVD's I cannot restore software Acer supply is B***ocksand I need to do a backup before I do anything.

And before any asks, I have 20 years experience in IT and I'm having problems. What's the average idiot that buys this rubbish going to be like.

If you're planning to get a new PC or laptop, DON'T get VISTA in any confusing flavour!

BUY SOMETHING WITHOUT THIS OPERATING SYSTEM AS IT'S THE WORST EVER. Even XP pre SP1 was better than this rubbish. They supposedly worked on it for 5 years before releasing it too! What I'd like to know is what they done for the other 4 years 11 months!

I had two beta versions that I used for about 9 months as a dual boot on my laptop with XP Pro, but they have expired now so I have just gone back to XP - it worked OK for me but I never really got into using it, not going to pay for it anyway.

Pretty sure the next laptop I buy (probably towards the end of the year) will be from Dell and have XP on it, rather than Vista.

I was told by our hardware vendor that effective July 1 all new PC's will ship supplied only with Vista as MS will no longer supply XP. However, for now if you call MS and complain that you have an application that will not run under Vista they will for $20 (Think it was 20) they will provide you with a link and key to retro-grade your Vista back to XP Pro... :headbang:

I don't have any of the problems you have had. I am running Vista on a Gateway laptop and my daughter runs it on a Sony laptop. Both work fine. Only problem I had was printing to a printer that was shared on an XP desktop on my network. I found a fix for that in one of the vista forums. I like Vista more than XP after using it for a while.

I used it for a week, but my IBM T60 barely handled it so I reverted to my XP image.

I think Windows Vista just gives brainwashed Mac users more ammo.

Yep! OSX is still the king! Leopard will be the new 'kid on the block' shortly and with Apple laptop sales increasing by 94% in April the tide may be turning! 8)

I always wait for at least SP1 to come out before I change over, maybe by then they will have most of the major bugs worked out. :P

I have used the beta version of Vista and I too find it rubbish. Takes far too many resources and that admin rights thing really is a joke!!! I'm a *NIX bod really, so I'm used to "root".... it's my F**king PC so I should be allowed GOD access to it, full stop! (period, to the US folks ;) )

I hate vista, but will no doubt install it as the change is inevitable, may as well get used to it sooner rather than later.

Am seriously tempted by a mac powerbook though... I have wht work laptop I use when I need windows, so I could now justify getting a mac for "fun"

I've no problems with Vista on my main tower PC. My laptop still runs XP SP2. I think SP1 will bring a few new features and fixes to those with problems with the first release of Vista, but like I say, no real problems here - and quite like a few of the new features.

What new features to you like?

The indexing has been vastly improved - Searching (for anything - even emails in Outlook) is very, very quick now.

Shadow Copy/Previous versions has saved me with a few documents.

I like the new look Aero front-end and look too, and Flip3D is just funky, even if it serves no practical purpose :P

It's no slouch, but not the fastest thing on the planet - the RAM i think helps a lot. AMD AM2 Athlon64 4200+, 2Gb RAM, GeForce 7600 GT PCI-E card, a few hundred Gig of drive space....

OSX is nothing more than a reskinned FreeBSD with a few added trinkets.

With that, I don't like Vista either.

Not such a bad thing IMHO :D

When I set up phpbb a long time ago, it was:

I used to be a rabid FreeBSD fanatic. Still have 3 or 4 servers running it because it's so danged comfortable. I had one internal webserver with over 1000 days uptime.

mmm, did you used to have a freebsd avatar on another forum? Was it invisionboard? I just seem to remember a "yal" from about 5 or 6 years ago?!

I just got a laptop a month ago running Vista Ultimate. The only problem i've had so far is trying to connect my network printer, for some reason it wont see it :( :( Other then that its been running great. Laptop specs are: HP DV 9260US 2gb memory and a Intel core 2 duo @ 2.0ghz. The 2gb of memory helps a lot!
