Anyone speak English in London ?

Theres been some really OTT posts on here over the last 4 months or so.

When it got to the point where I asked the mods to delete a particularly offensive post I decided to restrict my involvement on the forum limited as it is.

Tbh I'm not an avid poster (not even signed up to Twitter or Facebook) so no real loss I guess. I regularly check back but after seeing similar threads on here go totally over the top I think I'll stay restrained. :roll:
It seems so easy for keyboard warriors to post what they like from behind a computer screen these days and that's the Internet in general. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion etc but sometimes it gets a little tiring.

There does seem to be some genuine well educated enthusiasts on here. One of whom I believe it was Ste who gave a series of excellent retorts to a particular sustained onslaught in a similar thread a few months ago. Bravo, he kept his cool and wrote about facts. Good to think that there are educated young thinkers out there who know how to put there points across in a positive and professional manner.
Thoroughly good reading at times.

Anyways, back to my closet :thumbsup:

Don't hide in a closet - everyone should have their say equally. Too often it's the ones who don't have extreme views that don't share them .. and they're the people who often should be influencing others, imo.

Nobody should be getting offensive, if they are that's their problem, and sadly mods have to deal with this - but you shouldn't be afraid of putting people in their place, else how will they learn? Just make sure you have your facts right, and declare any vested or conflicting interests before it kicks off :evil:

*EDIT And yeah, i watched Ste's thread you're talking about - and i hoped he'd stand his ground, so was a pleasure to read it as it unfolded.
 
I'll give you the American perspective. The vast majority of Americans really don't have a big problem with those from outside our borders coming here to make a better life for themselves.

Where it all goes wrong. is when the folks who come here (or any country). refuse to assimilate. And for those nay Sayers. Assimilation does not mean denying your own cultural past. It means that one should adhere to the rules as set forth by the host country. But far to many immigrants (mostly illegal) demand that we print government forms in their particular language as they do not want to learn the hosts language.

That's a pretty chilling attitude. Yet! due to political correctness. If I (as a person that has family roots in Worcester England dating back to 1070) dare to utter any words that could even remotely be called complementary to my WASP roots. Well that makes me racist.

I simply say that all people seeking to enter any country. Should have to meet certain standards. Do they have a working knowledge of the host countries language? Do they have a skill set that will contribute to society? Do they have a violent criminal past? But should I raise any of those points in America. I'm considered a racist. or anti this and anti that.

+1, half them want to be on the Storm Front forum. Privileged first worlders driving sports cars complaining about poor people from elsewwhere living in 'their' country. FFS...

I live and work in London and yes, there are a lot of foreign nationals here, but you can't blame them for coming here to try to better themselves when average salaries here can be 10x what they are in their native countries. The vast majority come over and work hard and pay taxes, so to smear them as being illegal immigrants and criminals is grossly unfair.

That said, the government's immigration policies have clearly needed reform for years as we're already a vastly overcrowded little island.

Apart from one sentence in my 2nd post, I was just stating facts, not being racist. Regarding that sentence, it was my view of what I think is happening.

Again, not racist, just observing.

that's the problem, if you express observations or state actual facts then your seen by some as being uncooperative or a racist... or dare I say.... a Daily Mail reader :)
 
This thread is actually very tame compared to some of the comments I read on a similar thread on another BMW forum. I'm always surprised more than offended (takes a lot to offend me) by such comments as I find it strange that people don't take more measured views on such matters.

For what it's worth, when I read the OPs initial post I thought he was talking about the fact that a large portion of people in London can be quite difficult to understand even when they are speaking English.... Ye git me bruv? innit lyyyyke?
 
Being a proper tax payer for 30+ years, and my parents before me, and never ever claiming benefit.
Is there anywhere on the forum I can have a good old rant on NHS care.
 
I wish someone drew a budget map of the govt expenditure/losses, then we could all focus our rants on large problematic areas where small percentage savings mean large spare funding for important things, rather than whatever topic the media decides to make flavour of the week.

I dont think anyone has been particularly racist on here, and i think the OP was more interested in how many foreign languages heard in London - which is why i replied targetting touristy areas as the cause.
 
I'm moving my business out of Birmingham city centre where we have been for 30 years, and into the leafy countryside.
As an English speaking white man I am now in the minority and fed up with the hassles and attitudes than come with city centre living/working.
If I need to travel into the sh!t tip of a city I can do so much easier and safer out of rush hours!

I didn't mention blacks, whites or even the greens!!
I'm saying that city centres are dangerous places to travel arround and getting worse.
 
After Italy, Switzerland, and France ..I was just a Tourist expecting to visit the touristy spots and finally being able to communicate.
The touristy spots of London were on the agenda and my expectations were just that. So I wasn't all that surprised that Trafalgar Square would be jammed with all sorts of travelers.
Communicating in Commonwealth English usually requires a linguistic interpretation. Our tour had lots of Texans and Australians to practice on.
I was just a little taken back when my attempts to communicate or comment in Canadian were met with similar responses to my attempts at Italian.
When I discovered that apart from "Wot, Yes, No and Pay " anything else like a comment on the Royal Baby or blistering heat, just drew a blank gaze.
My post has nothing to do with racial profiling or EU immigration ..Just surprized at how little Brits were around.

Lastly ...
Nandos ...I like their products and so do my kids. They are rare in Canada and almost non-existant in the US ..
Faced with Italian and Waterloo Station Fare ..
Nandos won hands down.
After all that walking ..Well it was the best available for the price.

I live in London and have done for the past 13 years. Love the multiculturalism and actually find it to be infinitely more accepting, broadminded and open to difference than the English county I grew up in. IMO I love living here and believe you need to experience and immerse yourself in it for longer than a day or two to fully understand :thumbsup:
