Anyone on here getting their geek on with the Ubuntu Edge?

I've ordered 2. One for use and one for dev. Just wondered if anyone else on here is a proper nerd?

I am not a proper nerd by any means, but a friend posted this on Facebook and I had a good read. It *seems* that with the accelerating take up of secure cloud storage and solid state memory technology, as well as the introduction of proper 4G wireless networks, they may just have found the right wave to ride with the right product at the right time. Personally I love the idea of one device for everything, though you do need a screen and keyboard to use at a desk. No-one's managed to crack it yet. The most interesting thing to me was actually the way they are funding it - target of $32m to raise from pre-production sales of something that is not finished.. Basically they are selling it and getting payment prior to even finalising the spec - so if they pre-sell enough to hit the target then they will go into production.if not everyone gets their money back. Really innovative approach - using the mass market to invest, rather than VCs or large companies, not something I have seen before... Though I guess they'll want a couple to dip in their pockets if possible as they're only at $9m with just over a week to go.

I like it a lot - stylish / good looking too.

Spent the first half of the video thinking "oh no, not another phone OS" but then he goes on to say thats not the intention.

Like the idea of colour accurate display, something most consumers have no concept of when wondering why their prints are different colour to the original item.

Sounds interesting.

Epic fail I feel, but the idea is nice and I wish them luck.

This is my conclusion from watching the video anyway.

I think they are priced pretty keenly, considering how much a sim-free s4 or iphone is. This also doubles as a pocket PC. I especially like that it can run Android in parallel, so you'll be able to use your existing app collection.

They are up against it funding wise - but I am hopeful there will be a flurry. They are starting to get a lot of corporate support.

I hope they make their target, otherwise I won't get my devices :-) There is no risk, though - as I will receive a refund.

WANT

The question is... How much do they want from me?

700 dollars.

I have to admit, having watched the video, I love the concept. Whether I could drop 700 dollars on a phone where I don't even know what it'll be like... that's another question.

Allows you to consider yourself a venture capitalist...

Personally I have used Ubuntu for years for free, so am happy to support innovation like this - even if I run the risk of it not being 100% how I would want it to be... although it looks pretty darned perfect at the moment.

If the unit can be made future proof for tech advances (eg 4g goes to 5g etc...), the SaaS model costs are reasonable going forward and connectivity can be guaranteed, very happy to eventually dump my laptop
