Hi guys,
Thought I'd offer up this to anyone who might want it in the area (Berkshire/Reading).
I've just finished installing and getting DIS v57 to work with our cars. It took me a few days and is a total ballache to be honest, understand why people shy away from it! To get it communicating properly so you can run all the different diagnostic tests is bloody frustrating but very useful now its working!
Following up from previous threads about my VANOS rebuild and the Beisan kit, I decided to get DIS working as it contains a very useful VANOS test (amongst others) which isn't available on INPA.
Basically that test can give you the response times of the VANOS, the VANOS set points and what angles it reaches to check it is all working within tolerance. It also contains a VANOS leak test. This can be a very good indicator of the condition of the VANOS unit, the seals and other parts which may be failing but not yet throwing a fault code. If your out of spec it can affect performance to a degree but it would have to be a reasonable amount out to start throwing fault codes I believe.
All my results from the VANOS tests were spot on in regards the tolerance, the only test that wasn't was the VANOS leak test:

This has given me something to go on regarding my idle drop issue. As you can see both are out on the +/-5 degree tolerance, not by much, but could be enough to be causing the small issues I'm having, and not throwing a fault code due to the small amount they are out.
Basically it's a useful tool, and if any M owners in the area would like to run this test amongst others then I'll be happy to do it for you. Being an integral part of our engines it's useful to know whether its working within its tolerances or not
Cheers, Andy
