Hi,

I'm looking at a red Z4M for sale at the moment, 62500 miles.

Does anyone know thes car: YE06 CBF?

Should the mileage cause any problems?

Thanks

It really depends on how the car was driven and the maintenance.

It's not one that I saw when I was looking 6 months ago. Are you buying privately or from BMW or is it an indi dealer. Mine is the same age with half the mileage. You should take a good look at the service history. But at that mileage the engine should be great and the body should be the same, these cars tend to be looked after. there are plenty of wonderful examples out there. Just look at this forum.

62k miles should be no problem if service history is ok and the car has been looked after

My old E46 M3 (I owned it from new) had 89k miles on it when I sold it and it ran better at that mileage than when it was much lower. Engine just seemed to get smoother the more miles went on it ... :)

Only issues I had in that time were 3 broken rear springs, 1 new set of rear pads, 1 set of fronts, tyres and a new bottom arm (ball joint worn out) for the last MOT I put it through. My favourite BMW I ever owned (including 2 E92 M3's and a Z4MC) ...

Thanks for the replies. I'm trying to trace the service history at the moment to see what's been done and when. I'm assuming the run in service is very important, if its not been done what problems can occur and is it a deal breaker regardless of price? If its cheap enough is it worth a punt?

I must have that power in my life!

Thanks

It appeared on Top Gear, Season 8 ep4. Must be a press car. Went round test track in 1:26:00. Will have been "driven" quite hard I'd expect.

Ye I would stay away from press cars, hard use in early life could lead to a lower life expectancy or more problems.

How much is the seller asking for it ?

i would think a press car is the one to stay away from as the press dont care how they ntreat it use and abuse.were as if you own it yourself your own car it will get better looked after.
but at the end of the day its your choice .
dont touch one that hasnt had its running in service.

Done 62k in my Press Car & it's had no faults other than a spring, couple of o2 sensors & a few minor bits so basically the same as every car on here that's been used. When I picked it up with 1700m miles it had been through a set of rear tyres already, so I'm guessing they had some fun in the first few.

It will probably be half the price of Road Tax as Herminator suggested too.. PM me the VIN number if you know it 8) I've kept my warranty up just in case, but am starting to regret it.

I must have watched that zed lap their rubbish track 50 times, watching it over & over in 2007 made me go and buy an identical one.

As everyone else has said, just check the history, know which rattles and noises to expect but these cars take the mileage well as they're largely simple machines with well tested engines & gearboxes.

That's an awesome find chaps, well done.

I can't tell you how torn I now am, yes it's probably been driven harder than some but the S54 is a strong block and 'most' of the old VANOS issued have been addressed, but being a huge top gear fan how can I not buy a stig car? In fact come to think about it I've driven a stig car, sad i know but I am running round the house grinning like a small child, my girlfriend must be getting really bored by now!

Logical choice say's keep looking, but do we buy a z4M to be sensible......hmmmmmmm?

It does need the following doing:

MOT beginning of May
TAX beginning of MAY - How do i check the exact value for the ca? I was presuming it was £460 as usual
New front discs and pads (rear ones in less than a year i reckon)
Geometry set up as both inside edges of front tyres noticeably worn (it pulled very slightly left so it could be this or the camber of the road or a worn bush)
2 front tyres
Some cosmetic touch ups - front bumper has some bad chips on (one chip along the bottom edge 6-8-cm's long), and the end section of each door has a bit of paint chipped off
Next service in 7000 miles which i think will be an inspection 2 but the service history is sparse......very.

Other than the slight pull it drove really well, god these are fast and sound glorious.

All the above means a fair few £'s to sort so I think it will have to come down to price. But secretly i really want it.

What would you offer?

P.S. thanks for all your advice so far

These things would put me off. The former because regular servicing is one of the essentials that allow the S54 to survive being driven hard. The latter may just reflect the need for an alignment, but equally it could mean that it's taken a foray offroad at the hands of a former owner or previous Stig.

I would be cautious. It might be worth chasing BMW for any record of service history. I would insist that the alignment is corrected and a new MOT is issued as a condition of sale (by a different garage), and use the sparse history, poor cosmesis, and imminent need for brake work as a long lever for leaning on them to reduce the price.
