Anyone heard of Plasti Dip?

Was speaking to Ben @ BMKEYS yesterday after retrofitting TV module for a quick tutorial on using BMW Scanner so I could unlock TV in Motion and some other things.

Off topic he mentioned a product called "Plasti Dip" which is huge in the US but relatively unheard of over here and told me to go to YouTube and check it out. In a nutshell it is basically vinyl wrap from an aerosol can (or spray gun) therefore you can be really creative with where and how you use it. The unique thing with it is once you apply lots of layers, it is very durable yet to remove, it just peels off like a layer of latex.

Check out some videos by DipYouCar.Com in the US on YouTube who seem to be the authority on it. First one is them doing a whole Audi R8 and the second is them doing an alloy wheel while still on the car. Obviously taking it off would get better results for full coverage but it seems to be so easy to use that if you check out forum boardsin USA that mention it, total novices are using it with great results.

Ben's getting a M3 next week and in his own word "He's gonna go to town with Plasti Dip" so gonna pop over to have a look when he's done.

Next job on car is to fit my AE rings as after speaking with a couple of forum members I went a bought a dremil and will do the dreaded cut but that wont happen till we have some good weather. Planning to spray reflectors black when I fit the AE's so once that done, if Plasti Dip gives the same results as I have seen in the videos, I'll spray my alloys black to match.

If your interested in getting "Plast Dip" there is a UK distributor at http://www.plastidip.co.uk who sells the cans for £10 each which will do about 4 - 5 layers for one alloy. For doing whole car and other things, it is available by the liter and there are lots of finishes also available like pearl etc.

Mate, I go through cans of the stuff. Just received 6 cans of black, clear and gloss.

Fantastic stuff

And very popular here.

I think one guy has his z plasti dipped all over.

Well I'd never heard of it before but thanks for the approval on it as it has now saved me having to by a new set of alloys

Check out the gloss. There's a video of a guy who plasti dipped his wheels black then when bored he used gloss.

Brilliant.

There are metal flake ones too so if you want metallic black, blue red etc

Go nuts I say

How many cans do you reckon for 4 x 18" Style 67 Wheels?

I'm going to do the winter's I've bought in Gunmetal. See if you can guess why.

Then if the OH doesn't like it, I can just peel it off.
As it's rubbery it won't chip off as easily as a quick rattle can blow over I guess. (He said hopefully)

I've looked into it and might try something drastic with it in the future. But for the minute I think it would be good for the rubbery black trim on my m steering wheel.

I have used it before. It's extremely user friendly and can understand why it's popular.

I can see it working well on many items, however, I found once the edge gets damaged it starts peeling then comes straight off. Then again I am no professional painter, just highlighting my experience.

It didn't last long on the steering wheel spokes. In the end I used matt black acrylic which seems to be holding up much better.

Thanks. You may have saved me from wasting my time. I suppose it is a high wear area.

Yep - you don't realise how high the wear is until you do it. I use mine every day and the plastidip lasted maybe a month, 6 weeks at most. I had them painted locally, but as he didn't use a matte lacquer even that had now gone shiny... And scratched. However. It won't take much to have the done again now they've had all the plastic crap removed.

People have done their wheels with it - I think Marius did his in green with it, or something similar. If you think about it, there's not much making direct, continuous contact with wheels apart from water, dirt and the occasional stone. Small stones should bounce off, and it would be easy to touch up.

hmmm how easy would it be to get a good finnish? would you have to stip the paint off the wheels before?

Nah, a good clean surface would be enough. Then a steady hand and patience to layer it on gradually. I reckon.

I was not patient, ended up with a pebbledash effect more suited to an exterior wall :D

you need to do thinner layers so that its easy to peel off when you want to remove it, very forgiving though. ive done my grills z4 and 3.0i decals and roll hoops with no issues. its great stuff. for my steering wheel spokes i will be using a matte black plastic pain though as plasti-dip would peel.

really considering doing my alloys in this now! been watching quite a few videos and seems quite easy. plus if you mess it up it just comes straight off lol! where is the best place to get this?

Pretty much the only place to get it is at the link back up the thread, or sometimes eBay. The black comes into stock and seems to disappear overnight so you just need to keep looking then buy loads :D
