Any Z4Ms in QLD, Australia?

So the search for a Z4M continues and I have a lead on one that might just fit the bill! But being private means I'll need to temporarily scrape together the cash to buy it with until I can get my current Zed sold, which is causing me to second guess spending that much money on a 2006 car.

After having a browse of other options I see that a 2007 3.0si, which has a 5.7 sec 0-100, can be had for around the low $30ks. The Z4M roadster equivalent is still up in the mid $50ks (funnily enough Z4MCs are down in the $40ks). While I can afford the Z4M, the difference is still a big chunk of money I should be putting towards smarter investments (i.e. ones that hopefully appreciate).

So the question is, does the Z4M and its >1 second 0-100 advantage really command 180% of the cost of a 3.0si? Obviously it's not just the engine, but also the sound, the LSD and the brakes. The cost of servicing the S54 is a little higher too, but that's not too big a deal and registration/insurance wise they're fairly similar.

I love my 2.5i but I just want some more acceleration and enjoyment. I assume that being the pinnacle of the Z4, the M is what would make me happiest. Obviously the best thing would be to try out each of the cars and compare, however as evidenced by this thread, they're far from common here in Oz so it's a bit hard to do (would have to fly interstate)!

Thoughts?

You missed the best part of the M, the hydrolic steering. :D

Good luck once again in your search mate. Very interesting that the coupe sells for less there in oz, everywhere else the coupe grabs a bigger chunk of cash.

Funny you mention that - I've never had any issue with the electric steering. Maybe that's saying something about my driving ability more than anything else?

Lol, what ever you recon mate. How's the search going? Any prospects in mind? I just came back from a hoot, makes me grin all the time. If your visiting Dubai, I can help you out with a test drive ;)

I just realised that my last comment came across the wrong way - what I meant is that I'm probably not a good enough driver to notice any issues with the electric steering ;)

Anyway I did just get to have a drive of one yesterday. I was put in touch with a guy in Brisbane who has an M coupe and was kind enough to let me have a drive!

What can I say - the car is hard core. The feeling of driving it is exhilarating and it really is a driver's car. It's got so much power right through the rev range. Everything about it was just awesome and engaging. Suspension is hard, yes, but I'm young so that wouldn't be a reason for me not to get one. The clutch is excellent, as is the gearbox. I didn't notice a big difference in the steering, but admittedly I didn't really get to drive it in any situations where that would be noticeable.

This was the first time seeing one in person and I have to say the M bumpers and hood really are stunning. This one had the wheels from an E92 M3 on it too which suited the car perfectly. Oh and M sports seats have to be the comfiest car seat I've ever sat in!

But you know what - I'm not so sure the car is for me. Logically it just doesn't make a lot of sense for my circumstances compared to a 3.0si. I could live with the poor fuel economy (which for this kind of performance is not that bad in the scheme of things) and higher servicing costs. But the price premium for the Z4Ms here is really hard for me to justify. I can afford it, but I really should be making smarter investments with my money. Yes, the 3.0si has the ugly facelift bumper, but that can be swapped with an M bumper for a not excessive cost. The owner of the car I drove agreed with me - for him the M is a special car for when he's not driving his 5-series daily or his V8 M3.

So there you go - I was sure that the test drive would seal the deal for me, but instead it has left me even more unsure!

Yep, gotta love it. Everyone is different mate, and what works for you might not work for someone else. And yep, your damn right about investing the cash into something smarter. Worst investment is buying a car.. Ever .. Period.. Unless ofcourse it's a classic collectible (which the z4 ain't;)

In down under upside down world, save some cash, maybe go for a coupe ; D

And he'll yeah the 3.0si is a bloody nice car too.. No doubt.

Good luck with the call, my cash is on the smarter investment mate, buy a house/land or something.

Anyways good luck.
