Any medical eye specialists?

Got a vaguely reoccurring ocular problem that lasts about 30 minutes and manifests itself as vibrating colours prisms. Starts in centre of one eye and moved to the outside. Happens every 6 months or so and with slight headache (but nothing severe and sometimes nothing at all).

Any ideas other than the expected jokes? Have I defied medical science somehow and am currently mid way through developing Predator vision?

Happened earlier and I couldn't look at light objects or focus on anything. Bizarre.

I've had this before, exactly the same.
Happened twice as far as I remember a few years ago.

I put it down to a migraine but never knew exactly what it was.

Very freaky when it happened. Hope you're ok.

Thanks Carol. I feel fine. Freaked a bit the first time it happened but goes quite quickly and doesn't seem to have any listing effect. As a Creative Director though, my life is my vision so not being able to look at things does prove to be a problem :D

Have a read of this. I'd go to an optician/doctor for a check up tho if I were you.

Certainly worth taking Carol's advice on visiting an optician. However my thoughts are Migraine also, as I have these issues weekly, sometimes with headache and sometimes without. I've learned to live with it having had however many 'specialists' shrug their shoulders at me.

I had the same sort of symptoms last year / reason was heavy tension in the neck which was tightening on the nerves into the brain and so causing visual side effects and migraines

A couple sessions of Physio sorted it

It's a migraine. For me the 'shimmering' gradually gets worse until I have large 'blind spots'. Clears after 30 minutes or so. I used to get them regularly but now only very occasionally - none this year!

You can get tablets (Migraleve) that you take as soon as you notice it, and are supposed to stop it developing, but personally I found they were useless

You need to destress - if you had a roadster I'd suggest going for an exhilarating drive with the roof down!

I get one a week... 2 if I'm lucky! Flashing honeycombed eyes sometimes only cure is a dark room and an early night

Best get it checked out though mate.

I think Carol's probably correct with her migraine theory, but get your GP to check your blood pressure and an optician to exclude raised intra occular pressure (glaucoma).
For some reason I thought your other half would be able to advise you but that's probably my alcohol addled memory :beerdive:

I've had these since I was about 15 (longer than I care to remember) definitely migraine and at some stage there is likely to be a significant headache after the vision returns to normal. I have a prescription for such occasions as I also found Migraleve to be pretty useless. I get Imigran from my GP - 12 tablets for a prescription fee. I think these can be obtained over the counter now but at about £6 each tablet! I have 2 or 3 events a year and if I take the tablet as son as I see the sparkle start I don't get the headache. I generally try to lie down if one starts. as some are worse than others and there can be some nausea.

HTH.

You should go to a neurologist, and EEG should be made - it may be a forrm of epilepsy, which needs quite different treatment than a migrene.
If you have any more question feel free to PM me.

First port of call should be your GP in the UK.

Thanks again all. It sound exactly like an occular migraine from what I've worked out. Carol's link described it exactly and Ruby covered off some stuff I'll get checked with my Optician and GP. All good now and McKoval - I may wait a while and get these first things covered before booking that EEG

I've been getting a similar thing for the last 10 years or so. I can go for months without it and then get it daily for several weeks.

I just put it down to migraine, sounds like classic symptoms. If if can get a couple of Ibuprofen down me neck before the headache starts then of usually it goes away.

Looks like your'e on the right track inkey hope you get it sorted

I'm always amazed at what a great response you get to non-Zed issues on this forum - Brilliant,

My daughter had this happen last week, it lasted 30 minutes
Went to GP and was put straight on blood thinning drugs and referred to the stroke ward of the local hospital
Over 2 days she has had numerous blood tests (15 samples taken) , CT scan , ECG , and ultrasound scans on the arteries in her neck . She is also having her heart rate checked over a 3 day period
The consultant says it could be migraine but wants to check everything before making a diagnosis as she has only had one episode and if caused by migraine it only usually lasts a few minutes
