Another small "mod" (ashtray / coin tray)

I, as I believe many of you do, keep my coins (parking change) in my ashtray. I, as I believe many of you have, suffered from a coin slipping behind the ashtray (probably under hard cornering) which prevented the lid from opening fully :x

Using the small opening I was able to move the offending 50p piece, using a cable tie, enough to open the lid. I did find another 50p piece and three pound coins had also found their way inside. The task was a real pain and not one I wish to repeat!

My solution, I hope it works; I had a small sheet of felt material remaining from lining my first aid boxes which I used this to make a lid for the ashtray

To do this I removed the ashtray from the car, simply pulls out, turned it upside down hold against the felt and cut the felt to size. I then put a strip of double sided tape along the back of the ashtray and stuck down the edge of the felt. Now in place it actually looks quite neat:

Here's a second photo showing, sort of, where the join is at the back:
CoinStopLift.jpg

The tape along the back should hopefully stop any more coins from disappearing through the void. I did consider taping the top of the felt to the underside of the lid so that it would lift when the lid is opened. I haven't done this as it looks better than I thought it would and also I am hoping that when I have the lid open to plug in USB devices, it may prevent coins leaving by the side exit into the passenger footwell.

Another small Sunday mod.

It looks like a good idea, but I have to say....you have far too much time on your hands :poke: ...do you fancy marking some books for me?

He's going to fit a STUBBY next.......

And I thought it was only a non smoker (me) that kept change there :)

Picture shows there is no ashtray. But I couldn't see that option (non-smokers package) when the car was ordered.

I think a few people have suffered the same problem as me, with the coins getting stuck so I thought I'd share... as Alan said, the simple mods!

Ha! Stubby has been and gone... reception was utterly useless with it and, and for god's sake don't tell anyone, but didn't take to the look either!

As for too much time, lamp640, this was a 5 minute Blue Peter job, not exactly remoulding plastic on this one. Anyway, less poking more marking :poke:
(also my Sky box broke yesterday)

As for your sky box being broke pawnsacrifice, I really do feel your pain :( I couldn't cope without sky plus, but I prob be a bit more upto date with my marking

Hmmm... I've never had this problem... Think I should start taking those corners a little faster/harder! :driving:

Had to happen the day of the F1 and the final day of the Premier League :x Well, seems like a good reason to get the new 1TB box! Apparently VoD ready... whenever that's coming.

If you really want I'll post you enough material for you to make your own... you'll have to contact the BBC for your Blue Peter badge

Holy thread resurrection! Wish I'd known about this problem before I filled my ashtray with parking coins. That's half an hour of my life I'll never get back. On the plus side I am up £1.32, which I like to think may not all have been mine. And, really very oddly, a piece of Lego, which definitely was not mine.

Incidentally, should any other poor soul suffer this same misfortune and find themselves as I did, stabbing 'coin tray stuck" or some other such parameters into the search bar on here and discovering this thread, know this: if after expending an interminable amount of time wiggling a cable tie or paperclip about and finally dislodging the offending currency, removing the tray and the surround, pocketing the shrapnel and sticking it all back together again you find to your understandable incredulity and frustration that you've somehow now lost the soft-close function to the lid, do not lose your will to live; there is no need to drive yourself and the car into the sea just yet - a little plastic cog has fallen out of the lid mechanism and is hiding somewhere in the hole there...
