Another roof issue!! - not latching

Hi,

bought my z4 3 weeks ago with a broken roof - which was fine as i knew it was broken.

so i had a new motor fitted and now it goes up and down fine.

BUT

the last inch of going down (retracted) position, it doesnt go - and as this is a 03 plate, it has the latch that was removed on the facelift version - i thought this was stuck in so bought another, but it turns out its not.

it just doesnt go down the last little bit or latch, so the light flashes at me, and i drove it once with it down, but it was very unnerving, as i thought the wind may catch it at any point and turn into a z4 shaped parachute!

ive booked it in with BMW on friday, but its £150 just to diagnose it - then to fix will probably be the same again....!

just if anyone has had this issue and knows what it may be to save me some money!

cheers

Is the roof folding properly?

Was the roof removed to replace the motor? If so then the roof hasn't been properly re-seated, chances are that the hoop hasn't been put back into the brackets that are situated at each end of the hoop.

This will prevent the roof folding all the way down.

Agree with what Tug said.
Don't think it can be microswitch in boot, as roof will not go down at all, and led will flash amber, if there's a problem with the microswitch.

Had this on my 2005 z4 a while ago,it was the roof being out of alignment, according to the dealer i took it to st the time, and was ok after that. Worth asking your dealer or indy bmw specialists about getting this done. Don't know how much it costs,as mine was done under warranty, but didn't take them too long.

Thinking about this a bit more, the same thing happened to me once, and what it was, was the posts not seating properly.

The solution is to loosen the 2 torxe screws (on both sides) which are accessible behind the grilles on the side panels. The bottom one is the culprit!

So take the top ones out again and loosen the bottom ones until the posts drop into place then tighten all back up again. Job done.

Hope this helps, Cheers, tug
