....and its another roof issue for the forum

A few weeks ago I went to drop the roof and disaster - broken. I drive all my dry miles with the roof down and heater full on, my Z is my daily so its not as though its an issue from non use.

I press the 'roof open' switch and the above screen motor unlatches the roof then tries to latch again straight away.

I initially thought that the pump motor was 'cooked' and was more than happy to have an excuse to change it. It was relocated to the boot around six or seven years ago. When Mike Ducklakeview pulled it out of the container in the rear wing it was like a drowned rat; it was in water and I'm shocked it lasted so long even if its not the problem this time. I replaced it with a good (seen it work) motor - very shiny silver and as far as we can tell replaced by BMW just before the donner car was written off. Changed the motor and pump as one unit - still the same issue. I couldn't hear the pump motor running.

Having spent a few more minutes poking around I've found that:

With the pump bypass valve closed (normal position) the roof can be moved about six to nine inches (some air in the system due to changing the pump I think) but then is solid - I take this as an indication that the hydraulic lines are all sound.
I've checked fuses 12, 31 and 55 - all show a resistance across the multimeter and look good.
I've put the multimeter across the wires to the motor - no voltage detected, even when the switch to open the roof is pressed. I can't find any signs of damages to the wires going out of the boot, they are bundled with the hydraulic lines and these offer some protection for them.

Where should I be looking now? Is there a switch on the latching mechanism that triggers the pump motor once the roof is free to move?

I'm hoping one of you can help me out of this stupid!

Hi bigwinn,

I've messaged Enuff-Zed - was pleased to find he's still on the forum and still only about eight miles away from me!

Checked the windows and yes they do drop.

Hi Andy,
Can't be a leak as the pump would still run.
No power to the motor then would suggest fuses (you've checked them), relays (most unlikely scenario in my experience), control module (possible) or break in the loom on the left side where it folds, about level with the top rear corner of the window.
I have spare modules and it takes 5 minutes to swap one and try.
If its the loom then you'll find broken wires hidden inside the braided cover.
I suspect this is well within your ability to change, but i am more than happy to lend a hand.

Just one other check, are the front latches fully disengaging and lifting the roof a bit?

Yea, roof pops up about half an inch when the motor above the screen activates. This motor then cycles straight away and tries to latch it closed again - which it can't do without the hydraulic pressure form the pump pushing it in place.

I can lock to closed using the allan key; so long as two of us pull the leading edge down - otherwise its too stiff to turn the key.

I'll send you a PM a little later - it'll be good to catch up.
