Another LED install.....

....with a twist?

after a race with andysat for a set of LED strip lights for the boot (both ordered from same place on same day, in which Andy won) i finally got around to fitting them a week ago!

Initially the process I followed was the example originated by aquazi and pauly (i think), strip the wires back a little, feedthough a spare led bulb holder (two led bulbs inc holders on ebay BIN 99p inc delivery). However i changed this approach after a few days as the wires fed through the bulb holder were too thin to stay in postion against the electrical contacts.....

I bought a WHITE strip and a strip of RED. The idea was to wire them both together, fit into the holder and plug into the standard boot light fitting and once installed both red and white would be on when the boot lid was opened.

White led attached in a position facing down and backward to illuminate the cargo space and the red led facing out towards the road as a safety measure. the photos are rubbish but cos i only have a camera on my phone and cant adjust light settings etc but you get the idea........

Footwell installs are same as everyone else has done, but after putting the strip in the driver footwell, i worried about it dropping off and getting caught in the pedals at the least opportune time, so i took it out and replaced the standard filament bulb with a single white led bulb in the standard footwell light fitting. Not as bright as the strip but the same colour as the passenger footwell, and def better than OEM!

Sorry, forgot to take pic of driver footwell

Like i said i ended up changing the way i wired in the leds and it couldnt be simpler..... each led has a positive and negative wire, each standard bulb holder has a positive and negative point, i think you can see where this is going..... yep strip the plastic off the led wires wrap positive to positive and negative to negative... hey presto!! :D

Very easy mod and highly recommended!

Thats a great idea with the red facing out.

I wish my doors had that too... even my first car a mk4 golf had!

Where do you connect the leds for power?
It would need to be a power outlet that came on when the lights are turned on

My first strip that turned up were blue so they are resending out white :headbang:

Regarding the wire being thin after pushing through the bulb holder, I am going to solder the wire to add bulk to it as leaving the wire un soldered will only cause problems over time I would think.

love the footwell lights. if there is a how to can some one guide me. im no electritian :sos:

1. Prise out the original light fitting from one side (its only positioned into the carpet by dint of a tight fit :) )
2. pull the light fitting off the cable block (again just held on by the fact its a tight enough fit)
3.Separate the lens cover from the bulb holder (can be made easier with the use of two small precision screwdrivers or similar)
4. remove bulb
5. strip plastic from the pos and neg wires
6. wrap the pos wire around pos terminal and neg to neg. (you ll see what i mean when you take the bulb out.)
7.Put in all back together as reverse of above.

NOTE if you mix neg wire to pos terminal, in my experience it didnt result in any problems other than light didnt go on. simply swear twice and repeat above and but switch over wires!

hope this helps.

If anyone wants to add better tips or contradict/correct me feel free as im no electrician either

I'm really sorry to seem stupid guys, I have got my strip LEDs for the footwells, but still can't see where to connect them for power. If there is an original light in the footwell to take the power from, I can't find it :(

No, I don't have a light in the footwell :(
I somehow need to find power that is activated when the lights are switched on

Ah, simple enough, take out the ash tray, remove the base screw & lift out the small console, then tap into the feed for the orange cigarette bulb
