Android Tablets

We're looking for a budget Android tablet 8.5" to 10". Looking on Amazon the Android 4.0 OS seems to get mixed reviews and conflicting reports of its abilty with flash player and BBC I player incompatibility. Do any of you Z4ers have experience of the 4.0 or does it even matter if its 2.3 3.0 or 4.0.

Not looking for stunning game play, just a half decent web browser to sit in the lounger really.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks

Sean

Oh I didn't realise the thread was talking about that.. I clicked it thinking it was something to do with drugs that make robots feel better!

The Amazon Kindle Fire is supposed to be the only worthwhile competitor to an iPad. A friend was raving about hers but I don't have one. Not sure if you can get them in the UK yet. Otherwise the Samsung Galaxy Tab is also well thought of. The best thing to do would be to go into a Dixons or PC world and have a play.

The only real competitor for the iPad is the Asus Transformer Prime...but it's £500 ish....

Sean/Rachel...but a iPad 2, from the refurbished store on Apple website...about £289 I think....

Well I can tell you iPlayer works on Android 2.3.5 on my phone. Version 3 (Honeycomb) was the first version designed for tablets, and 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) was meant to be merge the latest phone (2.3.xx) and tablet (3.x) versions back together. I'd assume that 3 and up were best for tablets for that reason.

My mother-in-law has an Asus Transformer Slider. If you can stretch to £400-£500 then it's a brilliant machine, I love having the slide out keyboard. Means when you want to send a long email that would usually make you reach for the laptop you can just slide out the keyboard instead.

Out of interest does Siri need internet access to decipher what you say? I get the impression the one on my google phones (past and present) actually just punt the clip of your voice off to Google HQ who send back what they think you said.

Yep, Siri does require an Internet connection. Oh, and the new iPad doesn't have Siri, just a dictation feature (also requiring an Internet connection).

Have a quick look at the playbooks too, flash works perfectly. Mine got stolen at the weekend so I'm about to buy another :(

+1 on the Asus Slider. bought one for the missus for her Birthday, she loves it. The slide out keyboard comes in really handy, not just for typing but as a way of angling the screen when using it on a table or more commonly the arm of the sofa :D

I have the Sony S tablet, and think it is great....
it can be used as universal remote for pretty much anything with an infrared eye, and you can 'throw' videos or music to wifi enabled devices like you TV. Everything else about Android works on it, and it has an ergonomic shape for more comfortable holding while reading on it...

And its playstation certified... :)

Good call....it's still the best, don't care what anyone else says!

Advent Vega is fantastic value, if you can find one. Lots of support on MoDaCo and XDA-Developers.

Appalling screen though. Never understand why people would even consider a tablet that has a horrible display. I mean, you buy a tablet to look at it, right??

The cut-priced iPad 2 has to be the best option for anyone looking for a cheaper large-screen tablet.

Fwiw, I just sold my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 3G for £290.

Best tablet I've used so far. Much better than the blackberry equivalent/iPad stuff. Technology wise it sits between the iPad 2 and 3.

What on earth did we do before tablets came out!!!??? I'm surgically attached to mine!!
