Android Dash Display Screen

Looks good.
You will have to let us know all the things it can do out the box without buying extras and exactly what you had to buy to get what you have.

Following this post with great interest as I’m sure most are!!! Look forward to seeing the video and knowing more about the install and fitting the Idrive control unit

And finally how good the sat nav function is or do you use apple maps via car play?

Yeah I'll let you know.

Fitting the iDrive controller is straight forward, you simply remove the little box that's there now and replace it.
Hopefully the video will be completed by the end of this week, I still need to do the "how to use it" part, but I want to test a few things so I can let people know the best setting etc.
Sat-nav - Now it does come with Google Maps installed which works fine out of the box as long as you have a good data plan on your phone as it's an on-line app. I tried Waze, but that seemed to fail to see the GPS and wasn't seen as a default app for it. I tried Sygic, which is an off-line app once you've downloaded the map for the UK (via Wi-Fi) and it was seen and got the GPS all OK, seems ok so I'll trial that and see how it goes. Now I will be installing a USB dongle so I can have Android Auto working with my phone (wired connection, so charges) so this should hopefully work with the Waze, but I'll trial that once my dongle arrives.

Sounds like a plan.

Whats the ballpark cost?
I've got some figures from them, but I need to do some maths. I've also asked if there is a discount for the iDrive controller.
As soon as I have a price I'll post it up properly, in the proper section. The biggest problem will always be the $ exchange rate, and that the PayPal exchange rate is even crappier!
This could end up a complete nightmare for me, which is why I'm only considering doing it.

This looks good, couple of questions though

Do you have to already have I drive for this to install?
Can you install native android applications such as MHD?
And can this be connected to the car's OBD II or linked via the canbus?

Do you have to already have I drive for this to install? No this can be either a replacement for your existing iDrive screen to add additional features to what you already have, or to a non-iDrive Professional radio to add more functionality, you can even add the iDrive controller
Can you install native android applications such as MHD? I cannot confirm this, sorry
And can this be connected to the car's OBD II or linked via the canbus? You can connect Torque to the OBD, but it only supports a Wi-Fi version and NOT Bluetooth
As in red.
Always happy to answer any question, as long as I know the answer otherwise I'll ask directly.

This looks a tidy unit. Will be good to see videos of it working, I especially like the dash feature, does that have revs and speed ?

It does, but alas the speedo is in kph and not mph and is not changeable

Should you decide to go along this road I would be really interested. I bought the the dash cam you recommended and am really pleased with it. Looking at this thread you have certainly stirred up some interest among those of us without iDrive. Just don’t have too many more ideas for improvement. My bank balance won’t cope!

:D What else are you missing? :P I'm undertaking retrofitting auto dimming interior mirror and auto lights/wipers next  oh as well as a reversing camera and aftermarket parking sensors for this Android screen.

Lol
All the next ones are all relatively cheap.
I've already got all the parts, for instance the parts for the auto dimming interior mirror is just the mirror and a short cable ( about £16 for the mirror and 99p for the cable) so not very costly at all.
But that's for later on, I need to get this all sorted first.

Dash display looks good. Do you know if it sits tight in the mounting, or rattles/squeaks like most of the rest of the panels in the Z4? (I'm looking at you, sun visors :x ).
Also, is there an easy way to blank the screen, same effect as folding down the OEM screen, to stop it distracting you at night?
And finally, how's the glare/reflections on the screen during the day? I'm guessing you haven't had much time to actually field test it yet, so that will be more of an observation after using it for a while perhaps.
Really like what you've done with this, and for sharing your findings/observations here. Cheers

There are a couple of squeaks at the moment, not sure if that's because of the screen or because I've removed and replaced panels.
If you don't have iDrive at the moment you can put it into clock mode, which just puts a nice analogue clock face on a black background.
OK I managed to drive it yesterday in the sun, but not with the roof down (yes I know!!) and I had a nice reflection of the passenger seat in it. I could still see the screen well though so not a major problem, and that was with the sun in front of the car. When I get a chance I'll have the roof down and see what it's like then.
Overall though the quality is really nice, my favourite photo (attached) is from the side as it shows how well it blends into the original panels, they have done a really good job here.
The photos were taken on Sunday after I'd fitted it, yes I had a very nicely condensated windscreen by the time I'd finished
