And so the end is near.....

For those who have been following my saga....Next week my poor old 35is (Valencia orange, no black roof) will be shipped back to Audi and I will get my money back. After the refund, plus a few coins found down the back of the sofa I will have about 20k. If you had 20k would you buy another Z4, a different car or something else? I don't need a normal car as I already have one. :-)

You pose a tough choice there :( if you factor yr - miles - spec & performance in the 2 seater world the twin turbo E89 has them all beat but they do have flaws :( you have had problems but i wouldn't say mechanical issues or reliability are concerns for the majority so perhaps you were unlucky or you didn't delve deep enough when you buying ( a glitzy main dealer can flatter the ego & loosen the wallet  )
Unless you crave a cutting edge in handling i would be tempted to try again only this time you should know what to look for .
They are great cars :driving:

'or you didn't delve deep enough when you buying'. No one could anticipate the gearbox failing as it did. I haven't seen anyone on here having that problem.

A bad egg is a bad egg  if i wanted rid of a bad car then trading it into a big dealer would be ideal , far better to look the last owner in the eye & ask him if it has ever given any problems , you can't do that with a salesman who doesn't give a s**t if it fails the day after you buy it

I also don't believe the gearbox failed nor do i believe the dealership will replace it .
Very often they look to replace simply to know the problem has been addressed whereas in non warranty situations the answer can be a repair .

A forum car can be a safer bet (if you buy from the right forum member) :?

True Mr Wilks. I think .So 20k what do I do with that? I'm fortunate that money is a free hit. I can do what I want with it.

Possibly, but no warranty. A gearbox failure is 4k....

If i still had a mortgage I’d use the £20k against that to clear it quicker, depends what a persons life goals are :?

:P look at my inventory :D no point me telling you what to buy

Seriously though £20k is a great budget but as with any car hunt the bigger the spend the bigger the choice .
Ive already said for the funds there is very little to match a twin turbo 89 for year - miles - spec + price .
You could sit tight a bag a £20k 981 Boxster , it wouldn't be a low miler (45k - 65k ) & it would be significantly under the power of a 35i but it would offer a lot in other departments , otherwise i can't think of anything that i would consider buying in the 2 seater dept at £20k

Friday I went to the dealership to drop off the spare key etc. I took this pic. It looked fab. :(

Find another , "Stuartt " had his written off yet managed to find a better , newer car & is happy , i wouldn't let a mechanical fail on car deter you from buying another if you still like them

Same here, the normally indestructible 30i imploded underneath me & i jumped straight back into zed ownership with a different model which i couldn’t be more pleased with

I might sit tight and see how the G29 comes down in price. I have seen one up close up and liked the shape. (I know some don't)

If you can do that & the G29 appeals then i can't see a long wait for one to hit £20k :o won't be the big hitter but then do you really need that ?

20k ? Id buy another zed and a couple a hookers :P
Seriously, I think you won't find more car for less. I spent less than that and got a gem.
I've been trying to help my brother answer this question for 25k and he has found many nice weekend cars... BMW Z4, Nissan 370z, Jaguar F type, Porsche Cayman, Boxster, Mustang, and more... He's all over :?
You know where the heart of this forum lies

£20K is a good budget, but in terms of exciting 2 seaters I think mr wilks is right, there aren't too many options.

Probably E89, Boxster or maybe Cayman, although if I had that I would have just bought a less used M Coupe.

But if you liked your 35is in every other respect why not try again? From what I have read on here I don't think it is a common issue.

Good luck anyway, whatever you decide to buy.

Won't it be some time before you can touch a G29 for 20k ?
