Am I mad - considering Abarth 124 Spider...

The buzz has been mostly positive since release, but I haven't seen one in the flesh yet, or driven it (obviously).
Slightly less BHP than my 2.5Si, but being a turbo, I've heard boosting it is no problem (up to a 'sensible' level), and it's more about the ride experience than overall power/speed anyway.
The Abarth has an LSD, better suspension than the MX5 it's based on, nicer interior and so on...

I do believe the release price is a bit stupid, but deals may be had once the 'early adopters' have had their fill.
My Z4 is now over 8 years old, but I still like it a lot.

Thoughts/comments?

I also like them very much! Adding a little Italian flair a touch of luxury inside and a bit more power to something as well respected as the MX5 has got to be a recipe for a winner

I've just got off the phone to the local dealer...... and deliveries have been pushed back to around March next year :headbang: (was supposed to be end of this year, ie, about now).
Of that shipment, the two manuals have been pre-sold, sight unseen, leaving only autos. And, as much as I love the Z4's 6 speed auto, the Abarth looks like it should be a manual or nothing  .
It could be a long wait to scratch this itch, I think. Mind you, by then I should know of any major problems with the model by then.

No, but I can't help thinking enthusiasts are missing out here!

I much prefer the looks of the Fiat, but would also much rather have the Mazda 2 litre naturally aspirated engine complete with LSD that you can have in the MX-5 rather than the 1.4 Turbo Fiat option that only comes with an LSD in the Abarth.

Same problem coming with the Z5 - BMW get the convertible and Toyota get the Coupe - I'd like a Coupe with a BMW straight 6!

I'm only 167cm so size of car no problem  .
I agree the black bonnet/boot is a bit marmite, but luckily we can spec it without in our market (I'm not sure the US has the option but I could be wrong. Don't know about the UK options).
There is an aftermarket option to put a 500HP V8 in it, but at $50,000USD on top of the price of the car, I'm not sure what you'd be saying to be honest...

Does nothing for me in the looks department but that could be that black bonnet

Exactly - in Brighton that means it is a taxi, which isn't an ideal role for a 124 Spyder - or an MX-5!

Well you might be saying that one of them should have put a proper engine in theirs in the first place, so you didn't have to!

Like the looks myself. :D Remember it is a FIAT. Arbarth. It will steal your soul, then steal all your money and you will just ask it if it would like you to get a second job to help out. Enough said.

Italian Cars .........form over function, no matter how much they cost. 'nuff said!

I always think this to myself when I see the Ferrari posers being recovered back to the 'ring carpark after clutch failures or overheating. They try and brazen it out with a smile and a 'i'll buy a new one next week' comment but you know theyre raging inside lol.
you can tell the enthusiasts from the rich kids as the richkids don't have a clue when things go wrong!

Touching a lot of wood, but my Abarth has not had any costs in the 6 years I have had it. The McPerson replacement (twice) has been under warranty, and since that expired 3 years ago, nothing has gone wrong....

Personally I would wait for the MX5 RF, it wins hands down for looks alone.

Dear OP

You're not mad - any petrol-head would consider this car.

As a fan of Italian cars (as well as some of the German ones!) I can't helping thinking that the black bonnet/hood is an Abarth signature and should be compulsory on this one.

There is too much homage to the original to ignore it...

(Perhaps even the smaller engine. After all, that's where Abarth started)

Just my 2p, of course.

Nice - and cheaper than the Abarth by the look of it (sport nav manual version).
But I can't figure out where the roof goes when retracted?

Mx5 all day long... looks better, drives better and will have a huge and i mean huge aftermarket scene.
