Well, luckily not my house, but my garage was done over on saturday night.

They broke both security lights, and basically heaved the wooden garage doors of their hinges to get in. They also used bolt cutters on the gate lock.
I lost a huge amount of snap-on tools, a whole set of air tools, a spare set of alloys, and all the paperwork for my Dodge
They also helped themselves to the jetwash and car polisher from the "garden box".
Finally, they royally fucked up the framework of my patio door, obviously trying to get in, before giving up and leaving.

Luckily, they didn't even touch my car or the girlfriends Corrado, both of which were sat on the grass next to the driveway.

The Police were less than helpful, insofar as them saying "It's becoming quite common" and "we'll send someone round from victim support to chat with you."
Didn't even have the decency to send a bobby round to have a gander - they just want me to bring a list of what was taken and any other information I think is relevent to the station
at my convenience to fill out a detailed crime report.

Worst bit? House insurance are demanding proof of purchase for everything over a tenner that was nicked... and most of that stuff I've had since I was 18 - over a decade ago.
No proof - no payout. :headbang:
I can feel a massive arguement coming on with them next.

Any photographs? That is enough as proof as well.

The will send a loss adjuster who gets commission on reduction of payment to you, so don't take any cr*p.

So what did you want them to do....?

To be fair Alan, I had a DC from Brighton come to my place, I had two CSI people there within an hour dusting everything off - including my car, I had follow up calls - the lot.

They restored my faith in the police force (non traffic) no end. They were superb, kept me up to date, sent emails, the DC came around a couple of times, they evaluated security with some suggestions etc.

Heck, is it too much to expect a visit from constabulary?

Oh I don't know.... their job?

To come round and see if there was any evidence left by them... the ground around entrance to the garage is basically soft mud, and there are a few footprints that don't look like mine.
There's tool chests they ransacked, so they could check for prints.
Check with neighbours to see if they could tie down the time of the break in.
Check local CCTV for possible suspicous activity around the time of the break in.

Failing all of that, which I'd class as the actual JOB of the police, to at least seem INTERESTED in the crime that's cost me a fair amount in both money and time.
I kid you not, after discovering the break in, I went around to the local kebab house to get some happy food, and there was a police officer standing outside his car with his speedgun in hand... less than a mine from my house.. but they couldn't be bothered to send him round and make sure I was ok.

A year ago, I had my car window smashed and my satnav and cd collection nicked from inside it.
I heard it smash, and was out chasing the prick in my boxers, in the vein hope of catching him.
I did manage to see the guys face clearly, and had the foresight to write down exactly what he looked like before phoning the bill.
This was at 3am, so I had no hope of getting the glass repaired, or anywhere safe to store the car.

Again - did they come out? nope... gave me a crime number and then sent me a leaflet on beating car crime (effectively blaming me for leaving stuff in the car).
Whilst, yes I agree, i was silly to leave stuff in the car (although not in plain sight), I thought they were taking the piss then too.

Lets see what happens when I refuse to pay the portion of my council tax that goes to the police shall we?
I bet they'll be right round

lol... that was a bit of a rant.
Wasn't directed at you Alan - more the Police force of Nottinghamshire

Not to the garage, no.
I don't have a constant power supply up there - it runs of a genny.
I was planning to get the guys in to lay a power cable from the house after christmas - obviously a bit late :/

er, can you not just run a cable from the house alarm and fit a shock sensor

with respect to insurance, this is another reason i don't have any, they are not trust worthy, they will do anything not to pay out

Similar when my house was broken in to and also when my car was vandalised.

SK93, sorry to hear that mate, terrible news. Be persistent with the insurance company, have seen this before... obviously it will depend upon the insurance company but they were very reasonable with a friend last year. Think they bang out the party line to start with to deter any blaggers. Be friendly with the call handler and try and coax them into telling you how to get your compensation.

Good luck.

SERIOUSLY,THATS A BUMMER!
Hope they catch them/tho wouldnt hold my breath, given what u have said

Nope. It's about 300 yards to the garage, which is at the end of the garage...
We tried it when the alarm was initially fitted, and the alarm was just going off all the time, so we had to remove it.

In regards to the insurers, I'm fairly certain I will get them to pay out, but I suspect it's going to take a lot of time and effort on my part, and bugger all from theirs.

Sorry to hear about the break in. I have a PIR detector in the garage which is battery powered and uses a radio link to the main house alarm. Battery lasts for years, might be worth looking into.

TBH, it's not actually about getting replacement stuff that bothers me.
It's loosing the stuff I've had for years.
Strange as it may sound, but I had a snap-on torque wrench that was purchased for me for my 18th by my now deceased grandmother.
I know it cost her a lot of money to buy, and it was something that I had been saving to buy myself.
Kinda meant a lot to me, and now it's probably on eBay for £100....

Also, loosing the paperwork for the Dodge is going to be one hell of a headache.. I needed it all to complete the IVA, which needs to be done to register the vehicle for use in the UK.
Without any of it, I've got to try and get copies of the important stuff from the US department of transport etc...
Nevermind loosing all 30 years of service history it had. :headbang:

Why they took it, I've no idea.. I guess they saw the vosa paperwork and thought it might be V5 etc.

PIR sensor should be used as a last resort, the criminals are already in your property before the PIR's detect them, i prefer shock sensors, the detect them trying to get in

I wasn't aware you could radio link alarm sensors... that is DEFINATELY worth me looking into, as laying a powercable is more expensive than you'd think....

(Just trying to make things sound not so bad)
