Alignment Done - with before and after settings

Had the alignment done yesterday. Main drive behind getting it done was fitting the Eibachs and also because I hit the front wheel pretty hard (enough to buckle it)

Well surprisingly the settings were pretty much bang on. Quite a bit of camber at the rear but thats consistent with the drop from fitting the springs. So after loading up both footwells with a load of weight we set about making the changes. I wanted a bit more camber up front to dial out some of the understeer. But at the same time keeping in mind this is predominantly a road car so tyre wear and tramlining need taking into account, ie we don't want to go too extreme on the camber.

Rear camber needed putting back to oem. So at the end of this we'd be getting the camber a lot more even front to rear therefore we should end up with a more balanced car.

So this is what we ended up with:

As for how it feels on the road I haven't had a good chance to test it. It was tipping it down here so couldn't really explore the limits of the front end grip (well more I didn't want to risk it on wet roads in a car I'm still not that familiar with and on new allignment settings!) One thing I did notice is the tramlining that did increase a little after fitting the springs is still evident. Its not that bad and doesn't prevent you putting your foot down in a straight line.

Once it dries out and I get a chance I'll take it out and see how it behaves, and report back.

As for the guys at Carnetix I can recommend them. Seem knowedgeable and not afraid to take their time explaining things and doing the job right. Good set up there too 8)

Let us know how you get on with those settings, it still has a fair level of camber up front which is probably causing the tramlining but I agree it's not excessive my any means.

I would have suggested a lower toe value on the front and rear if you are complaining about understeer. * if im not getting my positives and negatives mixed up lol.

Why are u running more negative camber in the rears than the front?

I have -2.5 front -2.0 rears with negligible tramlining. Toe is important to dial in correctly for tire wear etc more than any other factor

I wanted to keep reasonably close to OEM settings as it drove ok on them, just wanted to dial out the tendency to understeer before oversteer. So we simply increased the camber on the front slightly.

Your settings are very extreme. I run -3.0 on my drift car!!! If you use your car primarily on the road with those you will see uneven tyre wear on the inside edge.

Nope. Wearing just fine, and has been for the last 16k. You'll find my settings very popular on our cars over here (USA). This is after a lot of trial & error, track days, and professional opinion.

Sweetride, can you post your full alignment settings as M@r]{ has please. I'm planning a summer of trackdays and I'd like to try some experiments to reduce understeer...

That doesn't make sense. The nature of camber is you will be putting more pressure on the inside edge, the wheel being at an angle. It has to put more wear on the inside edge (unless you spend more of your time going around corners / on track?)

Head over to Zpost and speak with the folks. Our cars have unique alignment specs and it's not rocket science. I have zero tramlining, even wear and next to no understeer. You should not be running more negative camber in the rears on our cars. Welcome to the Z4M

These settings I got from Zpost. Well a compromise on a few different posts.

OEM has more camber in the rear, a lot more than what I now have. So I have brought them closer together to dial out some of the understeer.

I still cannot see how running that much camber isn't going to wear your tyres unevenly, its basic physics!!

I'm not here to convince u. And with all the threads on alignment specs over there, I certainly wouldn't have picked the one posted. Regardless, enjoy your ride

So how about letting us know what settings you're running so I can try it :) I'm not worried about uneven wear, just losing the understeer!

Like I said I took that one, and a number of others posted over there. They all said similar things. It also looked good to the guy doing the alignment for me (he knows his stuff, sets up rally cars) He took it for a drive and was happy.

-2.5 on the front no matter what way you look at it is extreme for a road car

So, how are you liking the Eibachs? Are you satisfied with the lowering and ride quality?

Yeah I'm happy. They have dropped the car by just the right amount. If it wasn't for our poor condition roads and all the speed humps I'd say I'd like it a little bit lower, maybe another 5mm all round, but taking everything into account its perfect.

Ride quality is ok. Its quite hard but not excessively (bare in mind I used to an Elise with Nitrons)

I had a chance to really push the car on the twisties today, dry weather and my favourite road between Corby Glen and Grantham. I'm really impressed. I'm not sure what has transformed the car, the Eibachs or the Alignment (maybe a combo of both) but it is fantastic. I know this road well and the Z has a tough job to impress me here as I'm used to the Elise, but seriously, it feels as good. The turn in is awesome. Flooring it on a tight corner no longer pushes the front out, now the traction control light flashes at it tries to step out at the back. Gagging to doa track day now :driving:

This might sound strange but are you feeling more 'feel' with the Eibachs fitted? Mine were put on 2 weeks ago and I have a geo in 4 weeks after they have settled but I feel more of the road surface (not bumps but the 'texture'). It's not unpleasant but the car certainly feels different, more that I was expecting. Might just be my imagination

I am also intrested in hearing what geo sweetride is running??

On another note can the same geo be used on the non-M coupe as the M coupe and get the same results?
