Aircon with roof down

Whenever I drop my top I turn the aircon\ventilation off completely as I was once told that this is best practice. Is this correct?

Or, does the aircon automatically adjust when the roof is dropped so there's no need to switch it off?

I live near Memphis, TN. It is HOT and HUMID in the summer. I try not to use the AC when the top is down, but above 85° F and 75% humidity it is very uncomfortable not to drive with the AC on. So I turn it on, especially with the windows rolled up, like when my wife is in the car and worried about her hair. The car is much more comfortable with the windows down IMO; cross breeze I suppose.

I am not aware of any car which will automatically turn off the AC when the top is down.

I stand to be corrected as usual, and don't have the manual to hand right now, but I'm sure if I drop the roof on my E89 it diverts the aircon to the lower vents only??

It does on the E89 but I don’t know about the G29. Is there nothing about it in the manual? I’m in France and it’s been pushing 40 centigrade (104f) for the last week or so. Having the ac on makes a huge difference with the top down.

Just be careful if you do turn it off (like I do). The AC function turns off even if you then press the button on the console to turn the fans on again (fan speed button in the middle). I have to go into the menu to actually turn on the air con function otherwise all I get is just fans with no actual cooling. Very annoying.

It still comes out of the face vents in the convertible programme. It just seems to reduce the fan output so it’s not trying to ac the whole world! 😉

Yep - I've spotted that too.

I did a quick check in the manual but couldn't see anything linked to aircon operation with the roof down.

Last summer in Germany it was like that and I had the top down and used AC directed at me. It was the only way to survive top down motoring on those scorching hot days.
