Hi all

Hoping you can help. My Z has been barely used for past 2 years covering only a few miles. I’ve continued to service through BMW as had FSH with them. Went to get MOT done and had some problems with brake caliper stuck. Decided I would step away from BMW for future as the cost of the insurance, tax and servicing is getting so much it just doesn’t se worth it for the value. Plus, I will (fingers crossed!) never sell this car, it’s amazing.

So after getting the brakes done, went to get a friend to MOT but I appear to have fried the airbag module from one too many jump starts. Battery now replaced but light stuck on so no point putting through MOT.

To get to the point the new part is apparently over £500 from bmw so I’m scouting eBay for a replacement. Can anyone tell me the part number for this please? Much appreciated.

So an update on this! Enuffzed kindly accepted the challenge to code this but it looks as though it is NOT possible to code a used module on the facelift model. BUT it is possible to simply swap the part numbers over for a simple plug and play. I got another used model from eBay and simply plugged it in and hey presto my fault code is gone.

But here is the killer, I now have two new fault codes They are different codes now.

93BE -deactivation switch for passenger airbag

93D2-telltale lamp for passenger airbag

My car has the rare option of Isofix passenger seat which comes with the key switch by passenger door to deactivate- searched for ages for an M with this option! The lamp showing passenger airbag deactivated is illuminated even though the airbag is set to on. I still have the airbag lamp on dash on so no MOT for me yet!

Searching forums, mostly for E46, these codes seem pretty rare and have been kicked up when people have retrofitted this into their car. For these ones the illuminated switch (by the gearstick) did not work though. I don’t appear to be able to find anyone who’s had this!

The codes can’t be removed with any of the readers tried. I’m working on three possibilities:

1. the new module has indeed worked but the donor didn’t have ISOFIX and this has thrown a code. No idea if there’s a solution to that as the module can’t be coded!

2. The new module is faulty and is causing these codes.

3. There is indeed a problem with the wiring for the passenger Airbag and/or telltale lamp. Possibly previously masked (or caused!) by the previous (known) faulty module.

There seems to be quite a few airbag module questions popping up on here. Hopefully the information that “plug and play’ is possible might be of use to anyone searching google, hence the exhaustive post with lots of words to match the search.

I’m not expecting anyone to be able to help on this too much but please feel feee if you can add. I’ve submitted a case to BMW but they’ll probably just say to check the wiring of the switch. Will update this once I have a fix (or a new problem :roll: ).
 
This one has been confusing so far. To clarify, it has to be exactly the same part number you swap it with.
 
Absolutely. So if by some miracle anyone does happen to have the matching module to the photo in first post; with a car that also has the ISOFIX, then I’d definitely want to purchase it! Off to buy a lotto ticket with that in mind! :D
 
Big sigh today. Sent module off for cloning and it’s back! It’s also back showing the exact same fault as the original (the one that won’t clear!) 93D7 internal control module fault.

So after almost another year of me mucking around with various things I’m going to have to go to BMW and buy the new unit from them.

I can only conclude to anyone unlucky enough to have an airbag control failure on an LCI, that the part cannot be coded, cloned or bought from anywhere other than BMW. With perhaps the exception that if you find a matching module with the same part number and the donor car has the same options, then you may find you can plug and play. Very frustrating as all this was caused by me jump starting multiple times when I should have been trickle charging.

I’m very gutted, as I’d already planned to spend all the money I was saving (from cloning the module) on the car. @Srhutch afraid that Cruise control loom will have to wait for a while! Unless of course anyone has a cheap stalk going!

If anyone does have any ideas as to any other solution then I’m all ears. Have a good weekend all and thanks to contributors for your help. Especially Enuff Zed who I will be back in touch with once car is back on the road.

I have done a little reading into this and it seems a complete nightmare to solve. All starts from a simple flat battery for most people.

Read this thread and seems someone managed to sort but the process of them doing so means nothing to me :D

I got it working !!!

Believe it or not but I build myself a SPI EEPROM programmer out of Arduino.
I wrote software for Arduino to read and write EEPROM like I want it.
I wrote some PC software to load binary files to Arduino.
I bought clip to do on PCB programming.

I wrote clean 9172018 file to the module.
Took it to the car.
Programmed VIN with tool32.
Reset to series with NCS expert
Coded out my faulty OC3 mat
and ..


it is working !!!
No errors (well I managed to cleared out all of them and so far none has returned.

Yeh tried clearing. The amber light by gearbox has gone and the two codes showing on previous donor module are gone. But the blinking red one remains, as does this 93D7 code. Won’t clear with a snap on type reader.
 
Thanks for looking. It does seem as though that is the exact situation for me. But what they are discussing is well beyond me!

Reading the thread someone is lucky enough to do a straight swap for the same part number and it worked. I think that’s where I got to with the replacement module with the same part number. Only I’m working on the assumption the donor car didn’t have the isofix option, hence through a different code. Now I’ve had that module cloned to the original, it’s managed to clone whatever fault is on it too.

So really I’m back where I started!

I had a faulty airbag module as well. I found some guy in Poland on ebay who repairs these modules. It costet 170€ and problem solved for me.
 
Actually slight update on this. Gone back to the cloning company as they wanted another go at clearing the code. It’s coming back on Tuesday, so I’m crossing my fingers.
