Airbag ECU Programming Help *Solved*

Just to share the experience and the overall outcome to all you helping guys and the community:
I could successfully reprogram and integrate the pillar module into my E85 following the great google doc guide and the additional advices from you guys. The process was almost exactly as described.

I got just 2 small curiosities not mentioned in the guide:
  • During the process of coding the VIN I got a WKFP popup stating something like „The AIF can be written exactly 1 more time“ (seems as if the VIN procedure cannot be repeated indefinitely for a module).
  • In the NCS part I was a bit confused, as it showed an auto-selected collection of files used for pogramming. One of them had the kinda wrong car model „E61“ in it‘s naming (I think it was some kind of .DAT file) although there was a similar file in the folder with „E85“. Although I’d have selected the E85 file, I left everything as it was and it seemed to work.

Thanks to all for the help… :)

sorry to jump on an old thread, but im going to attempt this in the morning since my SBSL module has arrived.

Ive read through the doc in google drive, but unsure where to get the files from? Ive managed to download a suite of programs (EasyBMWTools) which includes INPA, WINKFP, NCS-Expert and perhaps more.

But im unsure where to get these Daten files from? The youtube video link no longer works.

If anyone is able to help me, id really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Jay

Bought my Daten files as a download from here
https://www.bimmerdiagnostics.com/
Cost £7.99, download link sent very quick, follow instructions, download takes about 2 hours.
Loaded E85 into Winkpf and all working. Version 66 was what I got, latest version is 71.
There are free downloads if you can find them but they take even longer to download, I gave up on them.
Tempted to buy their pre loaded Ista P&D laptop hard drive and give that a go as well.

Excellent, thanks buddy. I think I have a free daten file downloading at the mo, but then I’ve heard people say they need an older one for their part number, so not quite sure what I need if I’m completely honest. But I guess I’ll try today and find out :)

In my case I did not need older files although my original part number was not showing up as it was too old.
I could switch to an available newer one and used that for programming the switched part.
You can look into the .HIS Files to see the evolution of an ECU‘s part number. Use the .HIS newest one which should be available in your software suite for programming.

Awesome, thanks Domingo. I’ll give that a whirl at some point today. Pretty sure realoem shows the part number that superseded mine, so perhaps I’ll look for this?

As far as I understand it the important thing is that your software version is aware of the right part number to select the apropriate programming files. You Need to select the correct part numbers before programming starts. If you have an older software version it might not have the latest part number. Then I would use the newest one available in your suite for that ECU. You can make sure what is your software specific „latest“ by checking the .HIS files.

Well, today didn’t go very well. The new module arrived and I replaced it, and now of course it shows incorrect chassis number.

I’ve downloaded the tools (MikesEasyBMWTools) but I get totally different options to those in the guides linked to this thread, so I’m lost really.

Is there anyone on here that’s able to provide me with some download links for the exact software that is being used in the guides? It would be massively appreciated.

Thanks,

Jayden

Just to add, after following the guide, I got this number using INPA.

I then went into WinKFP > imported SPdaten file > comfort mode > enter ZUSB > entered in part number from INPA report > errors with this message.

Is anyone able to save me here? :D

WinKFP - comfort - zusb - then you have to select either sbsl85 or sbl264, whichever one holds the correct number for your module (check on the .his file). When you find the one with your number in, look to see what the latest part number is and use that.
From memory I think it is either 4366 or 8087.

Thanks, I really do appreciate the help. I think most of the issues I’m seeing are due to wrong software versions, I think I have a mismatch of what you guys on here have, so I’m looking for a full suite of the programs so I can start again.

I did find the HIS file, but it was created on the date I installed the software and not when I scanned the car?

I’ve highlighted the part number of mine, does that mean I choose 8087 because it’s the end one? Or 8985 because it’s the one after my part number?

Thanks again, and sorry to be a pain!

And ps if anyone does have a copy of the software they used to code their airbag modules and could zip it up for me for some beer tokens I’d appreciate the help. Or even better if anyone could perhaps give me a call or even use teamviewer on my laptop to remote control it be more than happy to pay :)

You should use 8087

Thanks bud, I’ll try that tonight then. I think if I manage to get this working I’ll create a video with links to the exact software versions I’ve used for anyone in future.

By the way, did you use MikesEasyBMWTools package to install the programs you need?
No, I was lucky enough to download from Bimmergeeks before they had the court order filed against them.

I think maybe this is the issue then, as the guides from here are using a different version of software. Almost every option i see on this guide dosent exist in the software thats available to download now, thats a shame

On WinKFP, mine doesn't have the 'ZUSB' label on F2. It's called something else, but still use F2 and it all works from there.
If you get really stuck let me know. Maybe we can go through it on a Whatsapp video call?
