Air Intake Boot problem - Sorted

I've had a couple of EML codes appear ( E0171 & E0174 which are "Engine bank too lean" messages) and quickly identified the problem to a perrished Air intake hose which has the smallest of cracks in it.

I've been to BMW, quoted the Chassis number and collected with the required (non-stocked) part, (B13.54.514.880) ahead of getting my fingers dirty today and changing it. All was going well and the old boot came off in about 20 minutes. I then got the new one out of the bag and it's totally different !

Ive checked the websites and BMW have given me the correct boot for a 2004, E85 2.5, M54 Engine. However, the one I need is listed as required for the 3.0 engine (part B13.54.514.867). Have I got the wrong boot, or the wrong engine ? I'm now wondering if somewhere in the previous ownerships someone has changed the engine !! ( which would explain it still singing at 124,500 miles  )

Below you can see the 2 inch pipe connection I need for the missing hole (circled to the right) with the main engine intake circled to the left:

I definitely need the third hole as I need the main tube to run from the Air Filter, into the engine and the third outlet (approx 2 inches dia) to run on towards the bulkhead. there is also a small 1cm pipe that comes off the small spout.

Below are the results of a google search, that seems fairly consistent on numerous websites, showing the extra hole compatible with the 3.0 engine, so Ive either got a modified air system or or something 's else has been changed ??

Has anyone else found this, or can anyone shed some light on it ?

My Local BMW dealer doesn't open Sundays, so I've now got a car that's going to be laid up until Wednesday I'd estimate, so I'll have to find something else to tinker with whilst it's in bits !

The one they have given you doesn't have the hole for the sound generator. Did you retro fit it, if not the previous owner may have.

It originally belonged to Spectre , I discovered (2004-2007)and he did say he'd taken a sponge out of the Sound Generator, but I didn't know he'd possibly added the whole thing ? Was a sound generator not standard on the 2.5 ?

Nope only standard fit on the 3.0's :)

Just replaced the same thing on mine. Seems this part perishes on many Z4's. Sound generator is definitely retro-fitted on your's :(

All sorted now thanks. Got a 3.0 Boot from BMW and its all gone back together lovely. The sound generator must have been retro fitted by Spectre, when he had the car a few years back.

How much was it because mine needs replacing.

Think mine cost about £25 from bmminiparts. Not an expensive part, just fiddly to replace. Getting the jubilee clips off was the hardest part due to there not being much space to fit a screwdriver in there.

When I saw mine was split I thought it looks a bit fiddly to change. Must get it done when I'm back off my hols.

Yep, Ideally you need both a long screwdriver and a short stubby one too for the various angles on the clips.

Just a small follow up on this. My Emissions light came on during a long run. The sound generator pipe had become detached from the bulkhead. The light went off after reattaching it properly :)

Just found this part perished on mine
Is yours a 3.0i?
If so do you have a part number, or a link to where you got yours?
Cheers geoff.

I'm pretty sure this means someone has fitted a 2.5 and it's not an Alpina engine

You obviously haven't read my signature block Ewazix !!
I posted this many moons ago when I had my first Zed... a 2004 2.5, but a previous owner had fitted a sound induction kit, standard to the 3.0 !
I can assure you the Alpina has the full monty engine
