Air impact wrenches...

Ok,

For some time, I have "lusted" after a decent 1/2" impact wrench, most notably the Snap On CTU8850 range. BUT at over £500 with a couple of batteries, it was just overkill IMHO, for the times I would use it, and worrying about the batteries etc.

Don't get me wrong, they are awesome, my neighbour has 3 so if I ever need to borrow one, I can. BUT I also thought them a bit bulky and heavy..

Anyway, seeing as I bagged myself a new compressor yesterday, I now have a decent air supply in the garage. Got myself a V Twin :) SIP 9.5CFM with a 100ltr receiver for... £24 :) Actually it was £140, but I sold gold that I had bought in the shop for £24, for said £140...

BIG increase in air availability and recovery time from my 5yr old Wolf 3.0cfm with 24ltr receiver!

Anyway, got to thinking about air powered impact wrenches, as they are lighter, smaller and above all cheaper.

So have been hitting the net reading reviews, comparing prices etc. Looked at used ones on Ebay, but for an Ingersoll Rand or Snap On, they are silly money.

Then I came across "Aircat" and specifically their 1150 Killer..

Damn, 1,295ftlb loosening torque and 950ftlb for tightening?? WTF, the Snap On CTU has 600ftlb for loosening and tightening, and I've never struggled using one.

So, @ £250 ish from a UK supplier, I bobbed onto Amazon.com, and it will be here next Thursday, total price, including a genuine protective boot, and import duty/taxes was £191.67 which I am pleased with, especially as the UK seller wa quoting 10 days delivery!

Anyone else using this, or similar? I can't wait for this baby to arrive!

Looks excellent, but basically £340 to be able to take your wheels off quicker is mental.
How many times are you actually going to remove each set of wheels.
I will just stick with my extending wheel brace and take the extra couple of minutes.
Just seen your other post with the torque thing, £390 to take wheels off and put on again. :o
Probably just jealous, I would love one of those quickjacklifts in another post but £1200 is a bit too much.

Lol - Tools & gadgets, two of my many vices. BUT, once I have something, it will get used :)

I do a lot of work in my own and other vehicles, and is not just for wheel nuts. Got 2 clutches to do next week on my "days off"

I use my Makita 18v impact driver with a 1/2" adapter that takes a nylon-shrouded socket for the wheel nuts.

The driver has 3 settings to limit torque, the high setting goes to 175 Nm so removes wheel bolts very easily. For tightening, the middle setting seems to tighten the wheel bolts to around 100 Nm as it only takes a little extra with the torque wrench to get them set.

Does it stop you putting the rear wheels on the front though :poke:

Nope... nothing is idiot-proof... :P

I have a Clarke 12V impact doofer - has got most things off for me.

For wheels I break by hand and electric screwdriver off, screwdriver back on (not sure what its max is, but nowhere near enough to over tighten) then torque up.

Just reading another thread reminded me that I forgot to update this - Instead of the Aircat, due to Amazon and a cock-up sending from the USA, I decided to go for a 3/8" Snap On "monster lithium" cordless. 300ftlb in a 3/8" gun is handy, and it's a lot smaller and lighter than the 1/2" version.

It arrived a few weeks ago, and having used it several times, I AM impressed!

So much so, that I have also ordered the 1/2" version (gun only, as already have the batts/charger) with 600ftlb tightening and apparently 900ftlb "breakaway" torque for loosening. Should come in handy, seeing as I have a clutch & DMF to do in my Mum's car next week, and the clutch in the van started slipping a little last week too.. It never rains :| Well, it probably will, just as I am halfway through both jobs!

If its any consolation, i'm the same with hi-fi amplifiers.
I became obsessed when i found out how different it can make your speakers sound.
I have allsorts- from vintage tube as well as contemporary tube amps...to modern day digital ones.
To make it worse and as i have a place in the uk and holland, i'm constantly ferrying bits back and forth accross the channel at great expense when i should be flying bargain rate with sleazyjet and using car i keep in the uk when i'm there. Bonkers.
I daren't do the maths on how much my 'hobby' has cost me over the years in extranious travel costs and uneccessary amp purchasing.
That p&o ferry from hull to rotterdam is a lovely way to travel tho :|
And btw, taking advantage here i'm selling this if anyones interested....lol:
350 quid.

Nah, I did the audiophile thing when I was younger, and the first Wife sold it all!

I like to keep my hands on my assets these days ;)
