so heres a question - Noise : theres a stage 1 AFE and a stage 2 with the extra elbow.
im thinking the stage 2 will have the bigger growl (ala Guppe)... ? what does everyone think?

Not cheap and an open filter!!

Not open. Look closely. Closed on all 5 sides (except where the air is directed DIRECTLY into it). Looking forward to the review

By definition it is an open filter. I.e. A cone filter. I.e. Not enclosed in a box like the OEM unit. Thats the point i'm making. To a certain degree the Gruppe M is an open filter in a carbon enclosure.

Why did I just read this thread....... it's just cost me £360

That's it, I'm logging off now before I see anything else i need/must have/can't live without......

How come a lot of their power claims come with the statement...
The full effect of this system cannot be felt or tested on stationary dyno and can only be fully appreciated on the wide open highway.

Looks like a cheapo aftermarket job just for the sake of some CB in the engine bay. Not worth MAF problems... :x

I only found one option Z4 M (S54 ENGINE) AFE INTAKE STAGE 2

http://www.ca-automotive.co.uk/variants-Y2FyX21ha2U9Ym13JmNhcl90eXBlPXo0JnBhcmVudF9pZD0yODIz.html

Also, at the checkout the carriage was £18 (Quick) & I have just had an email to say it's not in stock & will be 10 - 12 working days :(
The AFE website only lists a Stage 1 for the S54, and they list the option of oiled (Pro5R) or dry (ProDry5) filter.

The picture on the CA website is of a Stage 1 item.

What is a MAF?
A MAF is the mass airflow sensor that tells the engine about the temp & volume of air coming into the engine. It usually consists of a thin wire/film and it's this wire/film that may get coated in oil over time. The MAF does do a self-clean burn now and then to remove contaminants, but it's not expecting oil, and will tend to burn the oil and leave a heavy residue on the wire/film, which in turn reduces it's performance (usually resulting in under/over fuelling) and can ultimately require cleaning or replacement.

While on a drive some months ago, they had a contest where they were giving away the AFE cold Air Intake and installation as well. Just so happens that my wife and I got the most correct answers and we won it.
So, I had it installed on my 2007 3.0i steptronic. I got the dry filter as well. My friend suggested getting the RPI scoop, but I do have a hole that goes thru the front to the engine compartment.
I did stop and open the hood/bonnet and it seemed that the CAI was actually cool. So I think it is getting enough air.
As far as noise and performance, the noise is just great. Lot more roar especially when it hits 4k rpm and more. More HP? I have no idea, bit I did get a ECU tune and that did produce more HP and torque :D .
Now my wife loves the car as well  Means that she wants to use it more often than before. :x

I'm going to be buying one and fitting once I've recovered from my laser eye surgery (tomorrow! :o ).

I'm buying purely for noise, ignoring bhp claims. I'll report back once I'm in a better position to review. Z8cookie, let me know how you get along?

Also interesting to hear that the poster above hasn't had troubles with MAF/Heatsoak and he lives in California..? :tumbleweed:

Shouldn't have issues with either as he's using the dry filter and the 'shroud' protects the filter from most of the engine heat.

Will do! Shame it's going to be the best part of 2 weeks before I get it by the look of it!

It's going to be the best part of two weeks for me to recovery from the laser eye surgery and my bank to recover from the cost. Then I'll be taking the plunge! :driving:

I'm still hesitating between AFE intake and BMC CDA
I had a CDA in my fiat Barchetta and it was 8bhp gain proved on dyno
the next 7bhp gain was on supersprint exhaus - so we're taking 15bhp gain from stiock 131bhp - I think one could achieve a lot more starting from 265bhp
