WD40 is not really the best thing to use for this - it's actually a Water Dispersant (which is what the "WD" stands for). Far better to use a Penetrating Oil. Also, if the aerial has seized, sometimes tightening it very slightly (1/8 turn or less) before loosening can help it to shift.
It's also probably good preventative maintenance to remove your aerial from time to time, even if you don't ever plan to replace it with a stubby.
