Advice on service for my M

Wasn't Redish the people that left your clearance tight and quoted you a massive amount to rectify the problem?

yup. as mentioned earlier. Theirs no bias to my comments for OP hence why i choose a garage i recently had an issue with, choose any decent well know indie and i think he'll get the same answer.

i trust none of the garages anymore either way, best thing i ever did was learn to do this myself.

Fair enough..

I would stop recommending them though, as they left you in the same boat Mo is now in...

He isn't far from you, you should set up an service to get them done properly..

to be fair to redish they said they were uncomfortable dealing with a zero clearance situation although i didn't agree they had their right to do so , Z4mo situation isn't anything like a zero clearance, we are comparing apples to oranges, so an email asking their opinion on a normal Valve clearance situation that they see daily isn't a recommendation to use them, so don't worry about who i recommend / or don't , concentrate on giving the OP your opinion on whether his techs should have shimmed or not shimmed those valves in question.

Of course they should...

Tolerance is there for a reason...
I have done loads of S54's and once you are down to the checking point of clearance then it's a no brainer to get the clearance correct.
They may not have had shims to hand of course..

That said, I still can't strip off all the parts, check all the clearances and put everything back together in an hour...

I was charged an hour but they had the car a week, I wouldn't make a judgement from the bill guys.
I have spent a hell of a lot of money with them since sept 2013 and to be fair I couldn't say they are all about money. I am awaiting a response from them as I've forwarded a copy of the thread. I know they pride themselves on doing a thorough job so let's see what they say.

personally don't think theirs any point sending this thread to him... we are a bunch of dudes on the internet to him , i do think you call some other specialists and ask what they done with the valves I've mentioned and why, take the potential that i am talking utter shite out the equation by asking some people that do this for a living, munich legends , whoever just someone thats doing this day in day out.

Reply from my Indy

Yes the inlet on cylinder 6 is slightly tight the valve shims go up in size by 0.05 which would bring us to the high end of the tolerance and due to it being an inlet valve it will get more tolerance rather than going tighter out of experience there is no point in setting it to the max tolerance.
When this would be an exhaust valve we would have replaced the shim due to the possibility of going tighter and burning the exhaust valve.
Also in reply to the post we have taken the rocker cover off the evening before and checked the tolerances at about 15 degrees c in the morning which is very important when the engine temp is too high there is a big difference in the tolerances we even had a look when hot and you will find the exhausts are way tighter then when cold.
When set to warm it will rattle due to much valve clearance.

Kind regards peter

I am going to ring someone independent but who ? I will try Munich legends

from all the research I'm going the inlets tend to tighten, the exhaust tends to loosen, which is exactly what yours is doing, inline with most I've come across anyway, including my z4.

also the shims go up in .04 so both could have been brought into tolerance. note the numbers at the bottom on the box... so he's either saying that to put you off the scent or lack of knowledge could be the issue as his response doesnt make sense, he's based what he said on the shims being 0.05 :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

you not going to burn the exhaust valve bringing it inside the tolerance spec... :tumbleweed: :tumbleweed:
so basically that inlet will get tighter and that exhaust will get looser from where they are now.

His answer doesnt make sense, no-ones called into question the car being stone cold doing these. With how they currently stand id be getting those 2 changed personally , this guys response is imo kinda worrying btw.

call anyone that does these day in day out... call a couple of people.

Does anyone know of another Indy in West Yorkshire that I can get a second opinion from ? Thanks in advance

Called two indys in Leeds one was BM care. No joy as their reception staff stated the technicians do not speak to customers even though I explained the situation.
I have emailed shim report to a Manchester based Indy. I will report back.

I think you are giving yourself a lot of hassle for .01mm.Unless you drive like Lewis Hamilton the valve train is not at risk.

You are right its only .01mm but surely its about getting the job done that you asked for.
Changing that .01 now could save you at the next inspection if they end up like Beedubs with no gap at all.
They checked, they are a little out of spec, so change it to get it in spec.
Its like paying to have your spark plugs checked, they take them out, tell you the gaps need adjusted but just put them back in without adjusting.

I've emailed Darren Wood a few times but never get a response.

simple as really.... ^^^^^^^^^^^^

and don't forget the looser one on the exhaust side will start banging the valve seat if that continues to loosen , too tight which can lead to the valve being held open both in the extremes BTW you no-where near that but all it takes is a year of accelerated wear, why wait, just get them in spec don't forget this guy was ALREADY in their as part of a paid for inspection2 and he could have just done this to the tolerance, my concern isn't so much for the car right now as currently its not going to hurt anything and OP can get these in spec easily, but this "master" tech thats left them where they are... even more concerning he's quoting incorrect info....

Don't forget people the next Valve clearance on this car could be 4 years away if you run to the schedule.... no way should those be left like that or if they are, they need checking again in 12 months time. Personally id want them in spec, especially after my recent experience which iS very likely the same type of decision that simpson probably made initially which eventually led to a zero clearance, i can't challenge in retrospect because i didn't get a shim report, shim reports are imperative as they allow THIS type of dialogue if needed...

Hell we may be splitting hairs over 0.01 but lets not forget the difference of the bottom to top end tolerance itself is only 0.05m, the window is tiny, so that 0.01 is still important imo ( if only to allow that tiny bit more wear before the next VC check) .. out of tolerance is out of tolerance and we are already dealing with a tiny range, they need to be in spec. Just trying to save people the hassle i had to go through potentially it was very stressful and in the end i had to research for weeks and jump into it myself and buy some expensive bits as part of that process.

Have you tried http://www.thebmworkshop.co.uk/

Saw some reviews on M3 Cutters a while back and they seemed fairly happy with the work.

I agree the clearance should have been adjusted when the check was made. When it comes to the use of feeler blades it's not an exact science and its down to the person how the feel is interpreted when it's down to .01mm, he could have wrote down .018 and you would be none the wiser.
The only way you can be sure they have been checked correctly is to do what you did and check them yourself, but to do that you do need some experience .

I will give them a try I've sent a copy to Darren wood in Manchester see what he says.
Will give these guys a try too.
To be fair they all seem to be quite busy and I will have to be patient. Cars parked up anyway.
