Advanced Driver training / accreditation..

So the results are in from my IAM assessment drive..had to do it in the Yellow Peril as the XC70 collected a nail in the near side rear trying to be a good advanced driver.. :headbang: :tumbleweed:

A reminder..on these initial assessments you’re asked to drive as you would do..not as you would think / expect as an advanced driver..otherwise it’s more difficult for the assessor to see where the weaknesses’ are..

I had my first formal tutor session with the IAM guy this week..having (partly) understood what the expectations were following the demonstration by the assessor on the assessment drive I knuckled down to the task.

I decided much as it was amusing that the Yellow Peril wasn't the best car for the job, so pressed the F56 Mini Cooper SD into service (remapped of course)..its got as part of its cruise control set up a speed limiter function..so learned how to use that.

So score card from that session better.

Only two obvious foo pahs..one I busted a 30 limit but rapidly realised that and corrected it, the other trying to briskly overtake on a country lane only for the speed limiter to cut in..had to abandon the overtake!

To gain a pass you must score 2 or lower in each category..a 3 in any category is a fail.

The First club is folks who score 1 in every category (with 2 or 3 possible 2 at the discretion of the examiner)

So two more tutor sessions planned, then a full mock test and then the real thing.

First tutor drive with ROSPA next week.

Now off for a weekend of hooning in the Highlands..

Inadvertently signed up for both the ROSPA version as well as the IAM version..so doing both.

Probably worth doing to get your insurance down on your mega modified car :poke:
I passed the Advanced Police version many years ago with some back up from a military course and there are very few insurance companies give discount for advanced drivers. The current on I am with does fortunately but it only amounts to a few quid

I knew an observer with the IAM - His driving skills were lacking - that’s an understatement!

His driving skills were best described as scary
I always recall a saying, those that can do, those that can't teach. Of course I could possibly comment on the veracity of the statement but I don't teach

That`s surprising as they normally ask the question have you done an advanced course so you immediately think you must get a decent discount but obviously not :(

And to complete the saying: And those that can't teach, teach teachers

When I was in 6th year at school I used to play and beat my PE teacher at tennis at lunch break. He still coached me and improved my game though. Never beat him at Badminton or Squash though, Tennis just wasn’t his game.

Similar experience. Played squash to a decent level in my younger days and found badminton easy as technique very similar, but can't get away with tennis at all.

So I’ve now completed 3 ‘tutor’ sessions with my IAM tutor and 2 sessions with my ROSPA tuner..

The IAM tutor issues formal reports..see attached..the ROSPA is more ‘casual’ with a fill it in yourself work book.

I have benefitted from the training…I’m not sure if it’s the desired effect but my ability to tram on at higher speeds more sure footed has improved a lot..

I’m reading the road now at say 400-600m rather than at 100-200m.

My best description on the training is that they seem to be training you to drive a heavily loaded hearse that’s late to a funeral very smoothly, with little obvious sudden movements but surprisingly quickly..

The IAM guy signed me off today to do a full mock test with a DVSA tester and then if that’s OK with a Police class 1 examiner..

I think the ROSPA guy will probably want two more sessions at least..his hearse is bigger but wants faster and smoother progress..

First IAM tutor review

You won’t be able to cope with going that slowly..

And I can give you some of my expert analysis on you! :tumbleweed:   :driving:

So I passed my IAM version of the Advanced Driving test today…

I gained a so called F1rst..around 5% of folks who pass gain this distinction…my serving Police examiner was very relaxed and set a good atmosphere for the test..one of the Highway Code questions was a tricky one I had to think through…

I lost two points off a perfect score by my desire to reach the National speed limit AT the road signs not AFTER… :tumbleweed:

I have to say I’ve found my driving has improved considerably as a result of this course…

I can now overtake 4-5 cars in one go with the same ease and safety margins as I used to overtake one! :driving: :driving: :driving:

Well done. I have been an IAM member (bikes) for 20 years and it is about progressive, safe motoring. I cannot stress how much my regular rides with my advanced group help to retain that. As for ROSPA, it is about safe motoring and not necessarily progressive.

I’m up next for my dummy test with the local ROSPA chap then all being well the independent ROSPA examiner..

So far there does seem to be a different emphasis with the ROSPA guys..they have me reversing backwards through several backstreets..the IAM guys said if you can reverse into the parking bay you’re good to go..we will see… :tumbleweed:
