Is it possible to add the usb (6fl) option to my radio. My car has the standard non idrive radio with Bluetooth and a second input on the rear, see below

You need a MULF2 hardware or a Combox..this article explains it in detail...

https://e90.spoolstreet.com/threads/combox-retrofit-guide.2159/

Your vin decoder will show if those units are already fitted..

From what I can see from the order options my car is set for Professional radio 663, Handsfree 6NN, CD preparation 694. I had previously see on the net that this radio didn’t require MULF or Combox but I can’t find the information at the moment. I should have also said my car build date is July 2011.
Cheers

Is a commercial service that does what you want..

That photo does show a USB HSD connector so it does have a USB port.
You can buy the USB connectors cheap on ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aux-in-USB-Switch-Socket-Cable-Connector-Adapter-3-5mm-for-BMW-3-5-Series-E87/233084202970

This video shows it being done on an E90:

Hello R.E92, does that option give you full 6FL functionality?

It appears it does in which case why pay a lot more ?

6FL would require a MULF2-HI, but that only adds the ability to connect an iPod on top of the USB stick playback so not much different.

Since he's lacking CIC the Combox is out of the question. Not sure how a MULF2-HI retrofit would work, depends what existing hardware is in the boot, could be as easy as buying the MULF2-HI for £40 on eBay and swapping the connectors over.

Either way the Radio module needs to have the USB option enabled with a little bit of coding as it's off by default.

Thanks for the input I have already got at socket and lead of the internet. Not sure now that I will gain anything over having my iPod connected to the aux jack socket.
What control would you have over the memory stick if I fit the usd socket and found someone to code the radio.

I assume you may not get the extended iPod support..ie art work/shuttle/random/playlists etc but without iDrive a lot of that is u/s anyway..

That headunit is the later spec version with built-in Bluetooth and full USB control (ie; combox). No additional parts, apart from the USB/AUX socket and associated cable are required.
As stated $6FL will need to be added to the VO, and for good measure +IPOD (although there is no proof that this additional code actually does anything, but better safe than sorry  it worked for me) and then FA-Write to CAS and NFRM and then you are good to go.
Full USB control will then be enabled for memory sticks as well as full iPod control with a Y cable (X cable for some)

That's all interesting and logical, the number of discrete boxes BMW sprinkles around the body seems perplexing when so much could be integrated into one box..I guess they are getting there, if about 20 years behind most other applications..you live and learn..thank you..

Thanks AnubisZed for the information I will press on and fit the cable and socket, the only problem I will have then is to find some where or someone to code it to the car.

If you are stuck and don't mind the drive (assuming you are allowed at the moment!!) then I do coding and can sort that for you, but I'm over in Grantham, Lincolnshire so around a 3 hour drive each way 8) :?
EDIT** To fit the socket and cable...…
Remove headunit
Pop-up centre console trim
At the front where the centre console meets the dash you'll find 2 Torx20 screws, remove these.
In the middle you'll find one Allen head bolt (silver colour, you can't miss it), remove this but be careful as this is a two part bolt.
At the very back behind the console hinged lid prise up the plastic trim and remove the 2 10mm bolts.
Once all of these are out you can lift the centre console enough to feed the wire through to the position you need it.
Then push out from behind the AUX socket.
Feed in the new cable and plug into the new AUX/USB socket along with the existing AUX plug
Feed the new wire to the front and under the trim to the back of the headunit and plug into the headunit
Reassemble in the reverse order, taking special note of the centre 2 part bolt.

One of three things will now happen.
1) Nothing has changed, you won't have the USB option
2) You'll now have the USB as an option on the headunit but it won't work
3) You'll now have the USB as an option on the headunit and it'll work

It really depends on where the headunit came from. If you've replaced it with a used unit then chances are it'll fully work as it should and you probably wont need any coding. If it has always been there and you've just discovered it, then chances are it won't work without additional coding.

Thanks for this info, lock down is a problem at the moment but I will bear you offer in mind.
I have seen a thread on the net for the android screen fit that showed the console being removed.
My head unit is original to the car.
I can move around as the company I work for looks after ambulance radio systems and other radio systems but I don’t use the Z4
