A racist incident, your thoughts....

Some of the posts on the recent pages show one of the problems with these sort of threads.......things get taken out of context (thats what happened in the thread I started on another forum and it went pete-tong from that point!).
The worker who said the comment, was, at the time, saying it to a driver who was driving past. He surely cant have meant it as a threat (referring to the comment about being stabbed) cos as far as he was concerned the car was going to keep driving, so no opportunity to get "physical".
It is true though, that in this day and age, whilst at work, using that sort of language is very likely to get you into hot water. Everyone has their opinion of how hot that water should be (in this case, it was scalding!), but it is true....and right...that that sort of behaviour has consequences - wether a warning or all the way to dismissal, some consequence is justified. Whether you are office based, or in the public eye, those policies stand, and actually if you are in the public eye you need to be more careful, cos you (as in this case) are talking to strangers. In an office, the people concerned might know you and not take it further.
It is also true about words being seen as insults by some people, whilst others dont even register them. Lets ignore the "black" bit here, and ignore the racist slant....just look at the c*nt word. As I said before, I use that all the time to certain people and it means nothing to me. However, I wouldnt use it to a stranger, cos then it becomes a completely different situation. A said previously, the word tw*t is used by one persons mum who doesnt swear...but there are others who see that as offensive. I think the problem with these different "levels" of tolerance of words is when someone who tolerates such words ends up using it against someone who doesn't tolerate it....and thats not saying either person is wrong - its where the issue appears. Tie this into the context of the situation, the only safe way forward is to assume everyone takes offence (which they are entitled to do so) and therefore dont say it. But thats what the equality policies say isnt it?
I still maintain though, that in this incident, I think the OP did the right thing by stopping the car and confronting the guy at the time. Not so it could've escalated into violence, but so he could instantly make the guy realise what he'd said. I reckon that alone will have made the guy think about it and hopefully educated him to not do it again. Obviously, the subsequent actions of him losing his job were at that point inevitable and had been set in motion the second he said the words.

The fact that he thinks anecdotal "evidence" gleaned at 3rd hand from an informal internet forum has any place in a reasoned academic dissertation would go some way to explain the parlous state of higher education.
