A quick question - track day tyre choice.

So I have a track day booked for Saturday at Brands. It looks like it's going to be quite a cold day. So do I go for the 19 inch wheels with the part worn normal road tyres or the 18 inch ones with nearly new winter tyres?

Thoughts?

Many thanks,

Jon

If you start sliding when pushing it, you may chew through the winters...but on the other hand, the ride would be better on the 18s.

I know it's a conundrum! I'm not sure what's left on the 19s to loose, and it's in the garage at the moment so I cannot check. The winters are my daily drivers at the moment, especially with weather forecast! I don't want to muck them up, they were £600!
The ride is going to be novel to me anyway as its getting polybushed and a B12 kit fitted as I type! :driving: :driving:

Neither sound very ideal for a track day, especially not winters. But I'd say it would be a good day to wear through the rubber on the 19's.

Are they the BBS CH-R's? If so, I looked over this car before picking mine up from Glasgow a week later - I think the tyres were Nankangs with probably about 4/5mm remaining.

Enjoy the day!

Id stick with summers. Winters are only better than summers when on snow or ice, and if that happens you wont be going anywhere fast anyways.

One of my best ever trackdays was at donington, air temp of -2... but it was dry, track tyres heated up just fine.

They are! I think I'm leaning towards those as well. The track should be clear of ice and so OK. Out of interest what put you off the car?

Mostly the cosmetic issues, I don't have the time or expertise to sort them, and I'm too tight to pay good money for a front bumper respray when I knew it would get chipped immediately as I use mine daily. Plus I really wasn't a fan of the wheels when in person - easily fixable I know...

There was also a mismatch of service stamps/internals between his advert and the actual logbook.

But it seems you've been able to remedy all the above pretty quickly!

The main reason was that I knew the one up in Glasgow was pretty much perfect, so I couldn't miss my opportunity!

Are you planning on many other track days in the year?

+1 on your part worn summers.

I chewed up a £600 set of brand new Avons on one track day. It wasn't the tread but the sidewall shoulders on the front tyres that got worn through under the extremely hard cornering.

P.S. Take a compressor and try adjusting the front tyre pressures up a couple of PSI at a time. You would be amazed at the difference in traction it can make. Depending on conditions, I used to run about +5PSI, and it worked on my wheel/tyre combination.

Make sure you put the pressures back to standard before you drive home though!!

Daft to risk wrecking a good set of dailies, for a few hours fun. Stick the summers on and enjoy. Sliding around a bit is fun.
