A pilgrimage with Wee Bing

The Legend
 Exiled Scot in Maidstone
Bit of an essay, but this deserves to be shared properly so you enjoy it as much as I am... :D

It's Sunday lunchtime and I'm standing in the rugby club having a pint after the U12 side I run finished a game, and one of my coaches asks me if I am going to the match on the 4th Feb. Strange, as we've discussed this before and the answer's no, so i am expecting some banter - I have to 'enjoy' the game in the gauntlet that is my local English rugby club... Though the lager's not bad - it's Dutch :D

Next he says, "one of the lads has two tic...", at which point I demand to know how much. £100. Not even a micro-second hesitation - they're sold. So fast that, even though I'm standing right next to her, SWMBO had to mentally rewind the movie and play it back in extreme slo-mo. I bought two tickets via this chap for the match at Twickenham last year, took Wee Bing (11, now almost 12), and loved it. But it wasn't right, and he and I have been talking about going to Murrayfield for years. Mrs Bing approves, so we're on - best bit is Wee Bing is 3m away eating a burger and hasn't a clue what just happened. I LOVE being a Dad - he's going to be SO stoked. I am also stoked as last time I was there I was about 19. But I can't wait to see his face when he literally feels the Murrayfield roar as he's singing 'Flower of Scotland', which he learned word-perfect for last year's match :yeah:

Wind forward 3 hours and we have a problem. It's less than two weeks to the match, and Sleazy Jet says I need more than £600 to get us there and back ; Opodo says £359, but still - £400 plus when you add fuel to Stansted and parking. And the earliest flight back on Sunday gets in at 9.15pm, so home at maybe 10.30pm if we're lucky... Not great after a long weekend and with school the next day. Train is not much better - about £200, and 7hrs total travelling, and only if I can get him out of school early on Friday. And I hate trains. It's not looking good

However, as you all know, there is a Way - if I can get him out of school early we could be in Dalgety Bay by about 11pm if we drive, midnight latest. And if I can't, well the roads are lovely through the borders and central Scotland late at night. Unless it's pi$$ing down, but then it will still be home, a place I have not been for over a year. Cool. Worked out the fuel, about £220 ; can stay at my Dad's for free ; train to and from Haymarket, early start on Sunday ; home by dinner time latest. Sorted.

Which car though ? The Honda ? Mrs Bing's a fan - got cruise control, very comfy, lots of room for all the 'stuff' she'll insist we take. My response ? You have GOT to be joking, right ? Apart from what we're wearing, we need two pairs of boxers and socks each, a spare shirt & jersey each, 2 jackets, our toothbrushes, Wee Bing's giant Scotland flag, our replica shirts, and some prudent winter bits and pieces in the boot. Oh, and some munchies, an iPod touch, 2 tickets and my wallet. Nothing more.

So, as a result of my impulsiveness and subsequent (possibly slightly biased) logic, plus what I believe is a prudent approach to both parenting and money management, my boy and I will be undertaking an epic road trip over 3 days (970 miles or so), so we can visit Murrayfield together for the first time to watch Scotland reclaim the Calcutta Cup. And we're taking my Z :trampoline:

It would be fair to say that I am quite looking forward to the 3rd of February

Dutch laaaaaaaager in a Rugby club?? :?

Thought it was supposed to be a mans game ? Cask ale all the way!!

Trip sounds epic Bing, enjoy the match but hopefully not the result!

 liked the bit about Mrs Bing rewinding nanosecond events!
A proper Bing sr Bing jr pilgramige to the motherland via the Zed. Loving your style  And nothing like a bit of impulsiveness to create a memorable trip you'll both not forget. Nicely done and enjoy the roadtrip :driving:

Blast it up the A68, great road :)

I know that road, or some of it at least, once had a girlfriend in Gala... Great idea  Perhaps best blasting back down though ? Early Sunday morning, daylight, about the same travel time on Google via the A68 / A1... Not including photo stops though ! Wonder how far we can go with the top down :D

So does chapter 2 begin.... The long drive home following a real ass whooping at the hands of the men in white?
:fuelfire:

The men in white don't have the best of records at Murrayfield in recent years, and we were supposed to get whooped 40-0 last year... but I am sure the trip back will more than make up for it in the unlikely event you get lucky  :fuelfire:

Sounds like a memorable road trip. Of course the Calcutta cup will stay in its rightful home North of the border. I'm going to make a few similar road trips this year (after a great one at Christmas) and enjoy the freedom of crossing the border home...before i need to show my passport!!

On a more serious note will us Scots living in England get a vote?

Done quite a few trips with my son over the years like that (minus the sport part) and it is great.

Enjoy the trip sounds awesome.... I remember my dad taking me to Murrayfield when I was a nipper for a Calcutta Cup game something I will never forgot :)

COME ON YOU SCOTLAND

Thanks guys - I can't wait, it is indeed going to be awesome. Should be able to go for a quick hoon round all the local roads I used to drive as a teenager before leaving for the match... With considerably more style this time though :D My Dad's fairly excited about having a wee shot - should be interesting as he's driven a Freelander for the last 15 years

Love it, have a great day and don't let the result spoil the trip back.
C'Mon ENGLAND
Got to agree though could go either way at Murrayfield :headbang:

Will keep an eye out for you in the area Bing, enjoy the drive and the whole trip, I loved building memories with my kids.

On a more serious note will us Scots living in England get a vote?

Yes, as will the English living in Scotland.

Scotland,

Scotland,[/quote]

But the deal maker/breaker will be the English living in England! Who will vote? Why don't I know this?

Wee Bing has been granted permission to leave school at lunchtime on Friday

Tickets on Sunday, then Operation Pilgrimage is a Go ! In exactly one week's time we should be not far south of Glasgow :D

Just hope it doesn't bloody snow

Get wee Bing to take some pics of the trip. He might look back on a journal with pleasure one day...

On the way up it'll be motorway pretty much the whole way - we're leaving at 2/2.30pm, so even at ramming speed (and it's a Friday afternoon, so that's not happening) it'll be dark by the time we get up past Brum :(

On the way back down though, subject to an early start and no inclement weather, I am thinking either the A68 (as you suggested Adamski  ) all the way to the A1(M), then straight down to the M11, M25, M20... or A68 to Jedburgh, across to Hawick then A7 down to Carlise and jump on the top of the M6. Undecided at the moment :?

It's a long way and we have to get back reasonably early, so that means we can't veer too far off course for too long... But I reckon we could pick up some good roads and great scenery on the way, especially if we leave at about 6/6.30am :driving:
