A nasty lesson - how to break your rear glass

W@NK.

Just nipping out for dinner, popped the top down.

It got half way down then i remembered the tray in the boot was up. nipped out, dropped it. bought the hood back up and then down again.

Crunch.

The rear windscreen shattered.

I think it must have been caught at a funny angle and caught.

I know there are a few posts about prices as the entire roof fabric has to be replaced, but has anyone actually had this done and can confirm?

meant to be off on a bit of a :driving: holiday for a week on saturday.......

Arse.

yea, im with gannet - if the tray is up, then it would not drop.
sounds like a sensor was bypassed

Yes, the sensor is not doing it's job, but that's not why the glass broke. The OP states that he raised the hood after correcting the tray position. Raising it to closed position should have reset any bad folding or bad juju caused by the raised tray. It is after this that the glass broke, while opening the hood with the tray in the correct position, in the normal, proper manner that we all do dozens of times a week. I would REALLY like to know the true root cause of the glass breakage. Alas, there is probably no way to ever know.

erm... oops indeed... but it shouldnt start dropping the roof if the tray in the boot is up :?

Interesting, so the roof shouldn't budge if the tray is up?

I've only had one z4 so what mine does is normal behaviour to me!

Nipped into my indy this morning and he has never experienced this before and looks after a few Z4s.

He said he has had some come in with roofs catching just before fully opening and they've done some mods to sort this.

He's gonna get some prices and see if he can source a 2nd hand one too but we are looking somewhere around the 1000GBP mark plus 5 hours fitting and adjusting by the looks of it.

Sounds like the glass may have already been fragile. Cant see why it would shatter if not. Maybe you had a [ultra rare] rear stone chip or something.

yes that's correct - the light on the button control should just flash (red?) indicating that it can't fold it down safely. There is a microswitch in the tray area, this must me faulty on yours.

that said bummer about the window and repair cost

i had this saved in my ebay favourites its been listed a couple times but never sold might be worth giving them a call http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160635514602?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Oh dear.. thats a massive bugger.... did it totally shatter.. so now will allow the elements in - or just crack?

But mine def wont come down with the tray up.... even off the key.

As i found out trying to lower the roof from my remote.. stood perplexed after a few attempts got in my car and saw the roof lowering led flashing orange.

Yup, into thousands of tiny pieces.

SWMBO and I had a most entertaining hour or so removing all the pieces.

Fortunately the dyson wasnt too bothered about sucking up glass :) .

Well the indy phoned around some breakers and the odd one that had one were looking at ~ 1K.

He's managed to get hold of a brand new OEM manual roof and going to transplant the fabric across so although the hood is somewhat cheaper but with labour he's quoting just shy of 1.5K

I did find these guys offering an after market one:

http://www.monsooncarhoods.co.uk/BMW-Car-Hoods.php

fitted for 1225 but for the sake of saving a couple of hundred against the travel and trashing my holiday im sticking with my indy.

So i'll now be driving a hired Corsa for my weeks :driving: tour. not quite the same but i should save a few quid in fuel!

Hopefully this will be the end of it and i will not get any calls with more bad news!

Its the 'parcel shelf' behind the rear screen, you can see it raise and lower when the 2 knobs are turned on either side of the boot/trunk.
