A key feature of the E89

It's simply this: - those dinky little rear side windows; as they eliminate a common blind spot.
2-seater soft-tops never seem to have them and as a result often have a significant blind spot from the hood fabric.
Its a key reason for me why I'm not taken with the new Z4.
Of course there is no problem if you have the roof down, however its not always possible in this rainy country...

:D

To alleviate blind spots, try setting the exterior mirrors very wide. Or those small auxiliary wide mirrors.

G29 has lovely blond spot detection tech to help with that. ;)

Not starting a war! I loved my e89 and yes those little windows were useful.

Rear window is pointless in the G29. I sat in one i thought very claustrophobic, especially black roof lining..

Yeah - dont rely on that too much

It’s funny. When the e89 came out……everyone who has an e85 slammed it. Now the g29 is up and running everyone he has an e89/e85 slams it.

I’ve had e85, e89 and now g29. I loved them all. Each has its quirks. Saying that, the g29 is the best one yet. Only one I would say comes close is e85/e86 M Models. Comfort wise though…..g29 is far better.

I don't doubt the G29 is the best yet and I was very tempted by the 6 cylinder model, however for now I've still got the E89 under my skin and genuinely think it's one of the best looking BMWs of recent times. And yes I'm a sucker for those tiny rear windows as part of that design as well as for practical reasons. That said, we do have blind spot warning on a Suzuki Vitara and it is pretty damned good so I expect BMW have got it working very well indeed.

"Best" is entirely subjective. My E89 is best for me based on my preferences, circumstances and lifestyle. Your G29 is undoubtedly best for you, based on your preferences, circumstances and lifestyle, otherwise you would have a different car instead. Same with E85/6 owners.

In many ways, a McLaren 720S would be the best car for me. The only problem is that I wouldn't be able to afford my mortgage as well so I would have to live in it. This would make my life miserable and the McLaren 720S is therefore not a good car for me.

The whole "which Z is best" argument that pops up on a weekly basis is just completely pointless. You might as well argue about whether t-shirts are better than polo shirts.

can I just say the answer is t-shirts?

(oh and I was not trying to inflame anything - my apologies if it came over otherwise. I should have used the Boxster as a neutral reference point as that has blind spots the Cayman does not. best wishes to all Z car lovers :driving: )

by the looks of things you are based way up in the north, hence appreciate/need the heavier fabric?

here in the south...

I’d love a G29. I’m certain is a fine motor.

But I find that new BMWs aren’t worth the money. For that money, I can get a great second hand 911. And then there’s the pesky warranty, which in itself is crucial to have, but gets in the way of mods. At least in America. And finally the mods themselves. A new model is still getting tested.

For now the E89 works for me. But I’m sure in a few years time I’ll be getting grief from wifey for already looking at another car.

If anyone is disappointed with their G29, you can gift it to me. I won’t complain. :)

It also has big wing mirrors and you soon realise that you don't need to look over your shoulder as there is no blind spot in the mirror.

As an aside, the SL's cabin window area was enormous, the interior was so bright and airy in daylight and the g29 feels a lot darker inside, sorry ori, can't imagine I'd be okay with a black interior.

As another aside, how many of you in the UK have adopted left leg out first so that you check for cyclists as recommended by the new highway code? All I can say is that the guy that thought that up wasn't wearing heels and a skirt :poke:

I thought the discussion was more around the blind spot when you're pulling out onto a main road, turning right at more than 90 degrees. In the E85 I can't see what may be coming back to the left. In the E89 I can. No idea in the G29.

Hi - enuff_zed
That's very much the situation I have in mind - the area we live in has lots of road junctions at very odd angles and I find those extra little windows quite helpful for additional visibility on those days when I don't have the roof down.

Indeed, there is a particularly bad one in Bristol, it doesn't matter what car you're in it's always bad to see the traffic coming from the left, which is also down hill. In the g29 you get the warning in the passenger side mirror and I also lean forward and crane my neck to be sure. Green smear indicates where you stop and you have to cross Ashton Road to go down Winterstoke to Ashton Gate stadium or Sainsbury's

I love the black interior…….makes me feel very cosy. ;)

Did you know you also have cross traffic detection when reversing out of a parking space?
