Yes, it's only really applicable to the Alpinas as there were only 373 produced and each has a numbered production plaque in the cockpit - this makes it relatively easy to identify individual cars even though they may have worn a variety of private plates during their life

Assuming they're allocated sequentially, I suppose it might be possible from a list of the VIN numbers to work out a (rough) position in the production run - although with about 200,000 E85/86 vehicles produced you'd be looking at some pretty large numbers
 
Perhaps the poster used a VIN decoder - see below. But, AIUI, the last digits that give the sequential production number are not model specific, they're allocated to vehicles as the order hits the system - this allows customers to track the build progress of their cars

it would be impossible to work out because the last 7 digits contain LF, LR, LE, LL etc.
