In my seven speed slush box, at 70 it's 1700 rpm

My si sat at 3k rpm at 90 in 6th...

3,000 rpm at 90 :o - will have to check mine again next time Im on the motorway

That's got to be different as Bing had an auto? Seems low revs to me for that speed - going to check mine as well :lol:

Here's something to consider - in a 6 cylinder engine for every revolution there will be a third more firing cycles than with a 4 cylinder engine. Could it be that we hear more firing and therefore feel the engine is actually revolving faster than a 4 cylinder for any given rpm - if you get what I mean? :?

I've had this conversation many times... Though I now don't have the car to double-check again :D

The auto gearing may affect it slightly, but I wouldn't expect a lot of difference.

I've dug out the figures......

3.0Si (manual): 27mph/1000rpm in 6th ==> 2600rpm@70 / 3330rpm@90

3.0Si (auto): 29.5mph/1000rpm in 6th ==> 2370rpm@70 / 3000rpm@90

///M: 25.2mph/1000rpm in 6th ==> 2770rpm@70 / 3570rpm@90

Alpina: 27.3mph/1000rpm in 6th ==> 2560rpm@70 / 3300rpm@90

I am just less than 80 at 3k. I know this as I never go above 3k revs until properly warm. Fast enough for the trip to work!

The automatic gearing does make a difference as both 5th & 6th in the auto are overdrive ratios at 0.867 & 0.691 with a 3.64 final drive this gives overall ratios of 3.16 & 2.52 respectively

For the manual 3.0Si only 6th is an overdrive ratio at 0.851 with a final drive of 3.23 this give an overall ratio of 2.75 so somewhere between 5th & 6th on the auto

that would suggest the auto is the best

Define 'best'.....?

So does that mean the rpm will be higher at a given speed in the manual ?

Yes, in 5th & 6th gear at least, didn't really look at the other ratios.... (or anything other than the 3.0Si for the auto/manual comparison)

it could explain why i feel i need to change gear, the coupe is automatic, its a nicer car to drive

Oops, sorry - notifications caused me to post in response to Perry without reading other posts. I knew I was right about the 3.0Si. Good memory for the M too... Though that knowledge would be as a result of my forced warm-up procedure...

See, I disagree. I loved my auto, and miss it sometimes in stop-start traffic... But I don't miss it at all in free flowing traffic because 6th gear just goes on and on and on in the M. You don't have to change after 50mph, it may as well be auto.

Hey, you already have a son. Castration would not have been so bad for you 8)

Yes, even with paddles, you just don't get the same satisfaction with an automatic as you do with a manual, the harmony of a manually operated clutch and gear stick
