7th gear

I've dug out the figures......

3.0Si (manual): 27mph/1000rpm in 6th ==> 2600rpm@70 / 3330rpm@90

3.0Si (auto): 29.5mph/1000rpm in 6th ==> 2370rpm@70 / 3000rpm@90

///M: 25.2mph/1000rpm in 6th ==> 2770rpm@70 / 3570rpm@90

Alpina: 27.3mph/1000rpm in 6th ==> 2560rpm@70 / 3300rpm@90

I'm tempted to whiz out now and check my rpm's - could have sworn it was bang on 3000rpm at 70mph. Maybe I'm confusing it with another car :?

Yes, even with paddles, you just don't get the same satisfaction with an automatic as you do with a manual, the harmony of a manually operated clutch and gear stick

Yes, even with a clutch, you just don't get the same satisfaction with a manual as you do with an automatic, the harmony of manually operated paddles (or auto gear shifter in 'SD') :poke: :fuelfire:

This 'manual beats auto (or vice versa)' theme comes up time and time again. Fortunately, most auto drivers are above such petty name calling, and will take it on the chin good-naturedly, like the grown ups we are.... :cry: :chairfight:

Unfortunately with the car I have and also with the next, there is no choice, 7 or 8 speed slush box period, fortunately the b/f has a wee 208 that so I get to drive a proper manual at the weekend. It only has 75 hp but handles really well and is fun to drive, though it's like going from the star ship enterprise to a sewing machine with the overtaking capacity of an asthmatic snail.

A simple test though, if you could drive the Stelvio Pass would you want to do it in an automatic if you had the choice in identical cars, one being manual and one automatic. Conversely if you had to chug up the motorway for 95% of your time in the car, most would choose the easier less rewarding transmission

Yep - except, IMO, for a motorway slog, it doesn't make much difference if the car's manual or auto - it's around town that an auto makes life so much easier (and you don't get the 'pleasure' of a manual)

that's true too

Just look at this ...

Do you want to line up the car before the bend, get your body and brain to connect with the clutch and gearbox and try to get it just right and smile when you do once in a while, just really perfect?

Or do you want to press a button that does it for you and removes that interaction ....

None of this is confirming that I made the wrong choice of gearbox is it.... :cry:

Don't beat yourself up John..

If you want the top of the range car, you have to take the top of the range gearbox..

You could of bought the 35i though.. Or a 3.0 but then they are a bit slow, so what's the point?

Yes yes yes....I bloody get it ok... :lol: :wink:

Best drive of the year? You bet any excuse ... :)

Z4M-2006, I will be slower yes most likely, but I am not driving the car to the limits - I am driving it within my limits and for enjoyment, not to squeeze the last bit of performance out of it.

Cheers Gaz,

You're right and I thought a small number range topper would hold value better long term, it's just there's a mint low mile imola M for sale in Scotland.....

Why own it then?

Ford are doing some fantastic deals on the new fiesta if your interested ?

Now that is just a strange response ...

Ah..

Well I can't fault you going for an imola M car..

Certainly a different experience..

Unfortunately buying new is never a great idea depreciation wise.. :(

Use it and enjoy it John.... If the DCT really gets up your nose, Pop the car next spring and get into something else..

So many cars to try, so little time ..

Yeah I think I'll have to change it springtime and suck up the hit, I've not lost much on cars in the last 20 yrs so in the great scheme of things it's not a disaster...much..
