I can't understand how the dia of the wheel can change the ride quality !
Tyre profile, tyre manufacturer and type of tyre I can accept but increased rim diameter can only help over pot holes.
Imagine a garden cane, it's slightly flexible. Now which is easer get the ends 1" closer together. The one that 2ft long or the one that's 5ft long? It's the 5ft one. The same basic principle works for the tyre side wall. The smaller diameter wheel allows for more sidewall which means it's easier to deflect the same amount. So when one hits a small bump the tyre transmits less impact to the suspension & chassis.

But still RFT tyres even if they feel comfortable are absolutely appalling in terms of traction and handling because the can't conform to the road surface texture nearly as well. This is why it's fairly common to get a puncture on rounded gravel with RFT tyres (any brand) yet it's nearly impossible with a non-RFT tyres.

Has anyone tried asking for non RFTs at time of order....?
Never gonna happen BMW only have approved Bridgestone RFT tyres for the Z4. So neither BMW nor a dealer will sell you a car with non-RFT tyres installed.

I doub't they would play ball if the configurator doesn't allow non funflats.

My M135i came with non runflats as standard but wished I'd ticked the runflats as an option as I also specced adaptive suspension and the ride on runflats would I think still have been comfortable. As good as the Michelin Pilot Supersports are on the 1er I'm finding them too sticky and constant flying on stones around the arches is doing my head in

Tim.

That's the point, it's not the wheels the have the effect on ride but the tyres!
The profile of the tyres on my 326's look like thick rubber bands.

Having said that, my E89 on 19 runflats is much better than my E85 with 18 runflats, in fact when it comes to tyre change time I will definitely consider fitting the same Bridgestone rubber.

Tim, you didn't want to check that option. I have the tyres you would have got if you've ticked that box and regardless of how comfortable the ride is the lack of grip is really scary! I've got an xDrive & with RFT tyres a dip before/after an expansion joint will cause the stability control to kick in when the car's straight, when turning the car moves quite a lot. With non-RFT tyres the car just rides over it with nothing more than feeling the suspension compress after the dip in the road surface

I've never heard that complaint before!

A tyre that sticks like a limpid and doesn't wear must be like the Holy Grail!

It's that the tyre, outside shoulders especially, grab hold of small road debris then throw it into the wheel arches or worse onto the side of the car! This seems to be a particular problem with PSS as really sticky trackday rubber doesn't do this nearly as much.

My guess is that actually PSS rubber is even more sticky than barely road legal trackday rubber but as there's not as much road contact this results in lower grip levels. It does mean the tyre is better in wet conditions though.

PS. what's the deal with the triple post thing?

the only issue that I have as said before

is that BMW would not cover my warranty if I had a suspension related complaint, well this is what customer services told me

How ever when I went to the dealer where I purchased the car they where not particular bothered, but could be a issue if a BMW inspection engineer was sent down to see the car in case of extreme faults where the dealer was struggling to fix it ?

Stop worrying! :D
There are websites that look at the reliability of cars and from memory the E89 isn't high on the list.

Next time your over this way, come and have a go in my lowered,30 series tyred,H&S exhaust'd M coupe..

Your E89 will feel like your floating on air afterwards...

I tried to order non rft's at time of order, without success :(
Tim I had the M235 on non rft's adaptive suspension for a couple of days, perfect ! Tyres too stiky ! Never :D

The MPSS tyres for grip etc are great but they do seem pick up stones and debris like nothing else, they seem to improve after a few 1000 miles but hate the rat tat tat around the arches :x

Better that rat tat tat noise than the noise of the car going thro a dry stone wall!

Hi All

Went for a drive today with my wife, and really enjoyed it, done about 30 odd miles and started to bond to the car now.

The DCT box is great, you can see the gear changes in the digital display .. but feel nothing in the car when the changes are made. amazing really.

Had a blip on the throttle . .she is quick very quick

little pic before I clean her up for some photo shoots

thanks for all the help chaps ... (notice the palm reflection in the mirror)

That is great news I am really pleased for you and I think from now on in it will grow on you more

I am so looking forward to getting my 35i next Friday and that DCT box excites me :)
